Dear AT DC,
Has anyone used the Calligaris Eleven (or similar) expanding coffee table? It is a glass coffee table that moves up and down and expands to fit 6-8. Can people sit comfortably around the table given the steel mechanism under the table? Is it an attractive piece?
I am desperately looking for a dining table solution in a very small space with an enormous (75 in x 30in) in-kitchen island that leaves no room for regular dining solution. I have also thought of a 36" x 36" expanding table, but it looks a bit like a fish out of water in the room. Help! Any suggestions?

Dear Coffee Table Crazy,
Calligaris makes different styles of expanding tables (we really enjoy our Calligaris Olivia pocket table). More below the jump...

I have this one in wood (maybe 4 years now) and I love it. Love. It. I've moved three or four times since I bought it, and though I don't need it for space reasons anymore, I wouldn't give it up. I use it to eat a casual dinner on the couch (keep it small, raise it up), move it to the dining room when we have a lot of guests (seats 6 easily, 8 in a pinch... and my Saarinen table only seats 5 at the most), and use it as a super-size coffee table for cocktail parties (expand it, keep it low).

Totally not trying to be Debbie Downer, but that table reminds me of an ironing board and I hate the frosted green glass.

That's the first thing I thought as well: ironong board.

It's a lot less ironing-board looking in person, because you'll likely never see it from that angle. I had the wood one at one point and it turned a living room set into a dining-room table on the fly. The wood one did expand in two directions though, the top unfolded and expanded.

Joey, are you talking of the Mascotti table. i have the Mascotti one in wenge. it looks great. we use it as a coffee table and raise it for dinner for 2. It opens up for 6 people too. we have it for 4 years now and thats the only coffee table and dining table we have - a space saver

I have the LigneRoset Crescendo table in wenge. It is beautiful, works for me and looks nothing like an ironing board.

A friend of mine has a wooden one by this company, she LOOOOOOVES it. when she 1st told me about it, she pulled it up online and showed me all the pics, she was going nuts over it. and she hadn't even just bought it- it wasn't new furniture excitement. she just LOVES the thing. personally, i don't like how it looks, but if you do, i think it would be a good purchase... like i said, suzanne raves about hers.

We had an ikea table that had the same up/down mechanism. We loved it, and this looks much nicer, so, yes. Get it.

I have an Eleven, and I absolutely Lovvvit!! It's unusual and I got loads of complements from all of my friends. I got it at Skynear & Co, it's an adorable store on 18th Street. They also had a bunch of other dining table options for small spaces - all the furniture there does something cool. Anyway so my Eleven has a red glass top and I have a lot of red in my wall art so it's just perfect!

Calligaris has several similar to Eleven tables in various finishes, if you prefer wood and not aluminum. Have a look at Mascotte table - what a great idea for a small room.
