Good Questions: Furniture from Home Decorators Collection?

MonicaChair.jpg

ATDC reader Monica is looking for advice on a chair she loves:

"Has anyone had any experience with this chair from Home Decorators Collection? I really like the lines of it, but sometimes items can look better in the catalog picture than in real life. Anyone know anything about the quality of the construction? I ordered swatches and the fabric seems nice enough.
Thanks! Monica"

Unfortunately, we have never purchased furniture from Home Decorators Collection, so we can't speak to the quality (though the chair and ottoman do look comfy!) Do any readers have relevant experience with this retailer to share with Monica? If so, please post it in the comments below.

I would avoid buying anythign from HDC if you expect quality. There's is about the same as Target or Levitz. If you want trendy design on a budget, then they may be ideal for you.

IMO, the saber legs are really wrong on this chair and ottoman. I think this set is going to look dated very quickly. I get that you love it, but I'd keep shopping!

This is a Home Depot-owned store - and of you think the prices are too good to be true, you'd be right.

Most of the furniture is cheap quality crap from China.

FYI-- even more expensive stuff is being made in China these days. It may be higher quality, but still--made in China.

I have a buffet that I bought from them from their clearance section, its solid wood, has a real granite top on it, was easy to assemble and is very durable. The only "fake" thing on it was the board that goes across the back, which was still made out of basically cardboard. But its up against a wall, so its perfect. They're delivery people were great too.

Not sure about their furniture, but the area rug I just bought from Home Decorators Collection ended up to be a great quality Safavieh rug (they didnt advertise the brand on their website when I ordered it). Pleasantly surprised.

A few mos ago I went to a HD store and saw the stuff in person. Was not impressed...seemed cheaply made even for the low prices. A lot of the pieces seemed rickety.

I really do not like the chair in that photo. The fabric does not look good on that chair....it looks kinda cheap to me.

When you purchase any upholstery you need to check out two things. First the quality of craftsmanship on the corners, the smoothness of the lines, no wrinkle, the fabric stretch out well. Second, the heavy frame is better quality, because internal structure isn't some you see, but it will reveal story in serveral years after the kids jumps on it.

When you select the fabric you have to be aware of the texture or pattern you selected, you shouldn't have any vertical or horizontal pattern for this chair, even with textured fabric will show some patterns like herringbone. Pattern will be something irregular and plain texture will look nice on this chair.

There is a Canadian manufacture company called Stylus Sofa, it makes a chair like this one called Ritz. It offer lots fabric choice upto 250 . Also, there is another one called Carter, they have something similar. Best way to ask local furniture store if they carry either brand. The price you are expecting to pay is about $1200 for chairs like this with quality (life span of 10 years.
