Good Questions: Good Resources for Murphy Beds?

atla021208-murphy-bed.jpg
ATDC reader Reggie needs assistance:

I am about to move into a studio apartment, and am in desperate need of a murphy bed. Do you know of any stores that offer them in the Washington DC metro area? Or stores where I can order one online. I specifically would like to find one that is very modern with clean lines. Thanks! Reggie...

Reggie,

We think that murphy beds are enjoying a resurgence in popularity because they are such a great way to maximize space in a small apartment. We suggest you check out fellow Washingtonian j_fer_rose's beautiful Murphy bed for inspiration. Her bed came from http://www.murphybedsdirect.com/; the library beds are 40% off right now.

We would love to hear about other murphy bed resources from our readers...

I bought from the same place mentioned above; I just got the bare metal skeleton because I mounted mine behind a movable wall panel I was building. Quite satisfied. It took a while to ship, but that didn't bother me (it may bother you).

Also: holy crap, the boxes are heavy. Seriously. Have an elevator, or else some friends. This is probably why it took a while to get to me.

Does anyone know how to turn a closet into a murphy bed? I think mine may fit a double.

Thanks.

If you google "wallbeds" you will get a lot of resources. I know of one company that's actually called "Wallbed" and their queen sized beds run a bit over $2000, no mattress or cabinetry included. It's a bit pricey.

Lee Valley Tools sell the mechanisms but you would need someone to build the base etc. Mine is a custom one with storage on sides and above (queen size with long side against wall so not too tall).

I've been looking for a bedspread in the exact teal-blue color as the top photo, does anyone know where the top photo is from?

You can also try www.murphybeds.com. They sell directly on line and ship immediately (click into build-a-bed-online). You get your order within 7-10 business days of ordering. They even have an unfinished maple bed cabinet that can be stained by you to match other furniture in your room. Really good to work with. Good Luck.

Take a look at www.Zoom-Room.com. It's an electronic, remote controlled, retractable bed that's built into a custom cabinet. The advantages are that you can put a flat screen TV in front of the unit (maximizing space in a way that you can't with a murphy bed), you can customize the cabinet to meet your exact specifications (helpful in a studio where storage is at a premium), and it's more comfortable because of the adjustable European slatted frame and high-density foam mattress. Also, no one has any idea that it's there, it fits into any decor, and it's way cool. You can also call Zoom-Room at (888) 211-1120.

You should check out www.wallbedfactory.comhref> for really quality models. I have a Murphy bed from them and I love it-they have a wide range of styles, and I think that they have a fairly streamlined model coming out soon. They are pretty innovative with their designs too; I know they have a fold out table on one of them, and a newer one has the option of having a chalk board or white board on it--pretty neat! Good luck!

You all have to check out www.loriwallbeds.com! They are very affordable (comparatively). I'm pretty sold on getting one.
