Hi AT -- I bought these two chairs at a thrift store about 10 years ago, always thinking I could find another matching pair or foursome. I've almost come up empty, with the exception of the purchase of a quasi-matching armchair this year. The armchair is tagged 'Metal Office Furn. Co. of Grand Rapids, Mich', which might be Steelcase. The side chairs are Chromcraft and I've never seen another of this type in any color from that company. I've searched these brand names, as well as Emeco and Goodform over the years, and I'm about to give up on the idea of having enough of these chairs in this color ('toad green' as a friend described it) to fill the dining table, hopefully at a reasonable price. I thought AT readers might know where I might find more- maybe there is a certain part of the country where these are common? Thanks, jendavid99...

Wish you were in LA, jendavid99, as I'd point you to Steel Casey in Studio City. Regardless, here's their website:

Might help you in your quest.

These chairs are ubiquitous on Military bases and aboard old Naval Ships - I'd search the DRMS website (Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service) for a location nearest you and you'll probably find dozens of these from closed Military installations and retired ships.

Even if you find chairs where the vinyl is worn out, you could still get them recovered using surplus vinyl - or have them redone completely.

i actually have a metal chair that i picked up recently that won't go in my apartment. it is not toad colored, but it does need a new home.

It's an old navy chair. You can find some similar ones from Emeco.

Thanks for the posts everybody, I'm going to look into some of these leads especially
-- Voodoo: SteelCasey is gorgeous, hadn't seen that link before but I think the $$ is out of my range.
And bepsf -- once I decode the military speak in that DRMS site (how did you know about that? LOL) I bet they might have some great answers for me.
FYI: I think I paid a total of $95 for all three chairs so far. Not that optimistic about the next couple!

If you're in the DC area, it might be worth checking out the Terrapin Trader in College Park --
Anytime you see someone say "these were old Military.." or "surplus *anything*", it's a sure bet they can be had quite cheaply on the used market... Plus why buy new when there are still thousands of them out there.
Matching the color may be another story, but 2 pairs of matched / coordinating colors might be enough to tide you over for a while.
My sister has a set of 4 in school-bus yellow just sitting in my dad's basement in Indiana... too bad.

Also, this set is still listed on CL here... Maybe sell yours and snag these, they're beautiful!

Kvh - I'm in Nashvile *sigh*. Those chairs on craig are awesome, and you're right, I should be open to trading out if I find a complete set that I like.

My local DAV thrift store had those chairs in a variety of colors for $25 each. I think you would have the most luck secondhand.

Jen --
Look for a Surplus outlet from your local university -- I've found TONS of amazing, vintage furniture in places like that, among other amazing things --
Even if it's an hour drive to these places, it's totally worth the trip...
happy hunting!
