AT DC,
We have just moved into a new house in New Orleans with a great front gallery and are looking for seating options. We have tried rocking chairs and they just do not look right. We have tried some wrought iron options and they are not comfortable. I have seen Indonesian lazy chairs before and I think they would be perfect with our British Colonial Style. So the question becomes where does one get them other than Indonesia?

There's a store in Chicago that does Asian antique reproductions called Wow & Zen. May want to give them a call... If they don't have them, they could maybe point you in the right direction. Good luck!

Hi,
Try searching under "plantation chair" . I have a vintage one from my grandfather.

Hi, I absolutely love these style chairs, and have had my eye on the one carried by zGallerie; http://www.zgallerie.com/pc-1154-59-colonial-accent-chair.aspx (it's on sale too!)
best of luck with your findings! Cheers.

Pier 1 carried this style chair in cherry with a bamboo slat seat a few years ago. In case you want to use e-Bay or Craigslist.

Shop local! Shop NOLA! I bet the nice people at the Silk Road Connection on Magazine Street can help you out:

They've got a sweet set of bamboo loungers on their website right now, as a matter of fact. Click on "chairs" and scroll down a bit.
There was also a good Asian import furniture place up on Tchoupitoulas near F&M Patio Bar, but I'm not sure if they re-opened after the storm. I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it right now, though.

Nobody else thinks "British Colonial Style" is a bit... off-color? Like, "Don't you love this fabulous chair made by the enslaved natives of our colony?"

I am a designer and can recommend a couple of companies that designers regularly purchase but it depends on your price point.
Bauer International has really nice quality reproductions at fairly reasonable prices. They travel extensively to find the inspiration pieces and then produce them in the US.
This is the company website:

And here is an online retailer:

Also, there's Padma's Plantation:

Make sure you are happy with the way a Plantation Chair sits. The original ones had a piece of wood that swiveled out to kick up your boots so they are not really meant to sit upright in.
Best of luck.

Yeah, "British Colonial" kinda caught me off, too. However, I think it's not that different from having Empire or Federal or Louis XI-whatever style, though, is it? All of those styles/eras were built on the back of slavery.

I tried some plantation chairs in my front room -- I loved the design, but they were to freakin's huge. These are great if you have space -- note that they are not small scale chairs.

I think British colonial is not off color, it is descriptive of the time/place that the style originated and is a commonly used term. Similarly to "colonial" furniture in the U.S.

You might also try searching under Campeche Chair. Instersting fact, the angle of the seat is supposed to let the swelling come down with your feet elevated so you can pull your boots off after a day working in the sugar cane fields.

kimg924,
I have seen big and smaller versions of this chair. Also I would imagine leather outside would not be a good option. Perhaps sometime more like this...

the chair in your picture is simply a "lounge" chair, it does not have arm that swivels out, that would be the plantation chair ...
why not just call a store in Indonesia and have them ship to you? you'll save heaps of money, because shipping won't be much ..
confirm customs tax before ...
it would Not be a good idea to have them
'upholster" (as they would not know the word, & the quality fabric inconsistent) - be specific as to rattan or wood for the backing/seat ("the inside") ...
wire money, not credit card!!!
Call Herry 001-62-21- 7053- 0060,
or Johan 001- 62-818- 0556- 5691
a chair made of new teak should cost no more than
$85, specify stain color ...
good luck ...
