Yes this rug is much to small, It looks like a 4x6, you probably want need to fo to a 5x8 rug to allow the rug to cover more space and not be over powered by the table.

Too small - I would say you actually need three of them. Perhaps you could sew them together? Maybe even play it up with a dark grey or red x-pattern stitch. It does look nice and I can see why you wanted that pattern.

It's an adorable rug, one I would even consider! But yes, to agree with everyone else, I believe a living room rug should be atleast 5 x 8 and preferable 8 x 10. It should go under the couch a little bit, and you should be able to walk on it from the other side of the coffee table. This is more of an entry way rug of sorts.

Don't get rid of it, because its adorable -- unless you can find a replacement and sell this one! Good luck!

I would tend to agree with the other commenters that the rug is too small for this space, and I hope you can use it elsewhere! As for what size is appropriate, my suggestion is to go with something just a bit wider than the piece of furniture that will anchor it. For example, a living room rug might be anchored by a couch, while a bedroom rug might be anchored by the bed. As one other person mentioned, you want the rug to go just under the front legs of the couch (or the feet at the end of the bed). The overall size should be dependent on the size of the room/space and what other floor treatments you're using. If you're only using the one rug, you might want it to fit the ratio/dimensions of the open floor, but if you're using other accent pieces then you have some flexibility. Some of this is subjective opinion, but it's a good starting place until you find what works for you, your style, and your room. Hope that helps!

Could you try a larger rug under the smaller one? Layering rugs has been a trend lately.

Yes, it is too small, but you should be able to use it in a transitional space ... hallway, entry, beside the bed. And then you'll feel justified in buying a bigger one for the living area :)

Unfortunately, your rug is entirely too small. Rugs that small are meant for small hallway alcoves and vestibules, and the sides of beds to prevent warm feet from immediately hitting a cold floor in the morning.

A rug in the space should be large enough to extend at least halfway underneath your couch and other furniture or wall-to-wall if possible. The larger rug will make the room feel more spacious.

Way too small. If your floor were really pale, it wouldn't be such an obvious issue [though it would still be too small]. On your dark floor, no, no, no... It is sweet, though!

I think it should definitely cover more area from the couch to media cabinet/credenza as well cover more area from one end of the couch to the other. I agree that a 6x9 or 5x8 would work beautifully -- personally, I think an 8x10 would be too large -- when living room rugs stretch under furniture, I think it looks a little silly, like the rug was purchased mistakenly too large.

Hi, nice rug, but too small. The rug should extend from the front of the couch to the front of the furniture piece on the other side of the room. You could use it somewhere else perhaps. CKimT

I think it could look cool on top of another rug, something light in color so it wouldn't appear so stark against the dark floors.

It does look too small. Maybe you could take it to a place that does custom rugs and have them add plain fabric along the sides in a matching colour, so that you get a larger size rug with the original just being a central part of it. Or use it elsewhere, as others have suggested.

Well, I guess my gut was right. I think I'm going to try the rug next to my bed and hold out for a big rug in the living room. Thanks for all the helpful feedback!

Area rugs should be for the comfort of your feet, not the feet on your coffee table. It's a sweet little guy, though, and I'd love to stand on it while I did the dishes!

Yup, too small. 5'x8' is generally the smallest you can go in front of a sofa. I'd be curious to see how your rug would look possibly layered over a larger rug. It would make the patterned rug look like an inset of a larger rug.

Your floors do look great, though, and I think you'd be fine without anything.

I think it is too small under that table, but it is a wonderful rug. Can you place it beside the table? Can you afford another, complementary rug and have two (or more)around the table? I think it adds cheer and a second small rug in another nature color would be fabulous.

You have a wonderful new wall hanging! It would look fab behind the sofa! My brother bought me a too small carpet runner from Pakistan, so I sewed a channel of fabric on the back, ran a dowel rod through the fabric and put two hooks on the wall to hand the dowel in. It now hangs above my bed and looks great.

Another idea, would be to have it over the back of the sofa as a sort of throw. Or why not buy some heavy cotton, lots of stuffing and make a huge floor pillow!

When you buy your next rug try and go bigger than you think you need, so that the rug 'connects' the furniture on the room and goes under your sofa.

My brother bought me a very pretty, too small rug - which is now a wall-hanging above my bed. Sew a channel of fabric on the back (I used linen thread as it's so strong), then run a dowel rod through it. Add a couple of hooks to the wall, and hang up your rug.

Other ideas are to use it as a throw on your sofa, or add a heavy cotton backing and stuff to make a huge floor pillow.

After you put this beautiful rug next to your bed, try a 'test run' on the rug size in your original room. You can use blue painter's tape on the floor to mark the size you're considering now. And then live with it for a few days, or send it in here for further Comment.
Or, if you have another rug available that's the size you're considering (don't worry about the color, motif, etc. -- you're just checking for size), then roll up that rug, move it into this room, and put it under your coffee table. Try not to look at the color and pattern; just see the rug for size. This exercise can be a lot of work but it can be very worthwhile if you're buying from eBay or a source that doesn't allow returns.

I agree, the rug is much too small for the space. If you are really set on keeping the pattern, you could always get a larger rug in a neutral sisal or jute and layer them as many designers do. It's a great way to keep the rug you love as well as adding more overall size under the coffee table.

One way to make it look larger would be to add a border of Flor tiles around the edge. I saw it done on AT sometime in the not-too-distant past, and it looked really well-done.

That's too small. Because that rug is thin and brightly patterned, you might want to check out Urban Outfitters. The rugs are inexpensive and look to be the right size (5x7) for your room.

I understand how you feel about rugs that are floating in a vast sea of hardwood. Still- this seems like too hard and fast of a rule. Everyone's living room size and furniture arrangements are different. 8x10 might look huge in some spaces!

You should also ignore the person who says a living room rug needs to be an 8x10 minimum. It's all about proportion and an 8x10 would look like crazy wall to wall nastiness in your space.

You might take it to a carpet place and have a border of similar textured plain color added around the edges. (Although that might be cost prohibitive, if on a budget.)

Or layer it on a plain color bound carpet remnant. (Discount stores around here sell those for ~$30.)

I too think the rug would be a lovely wall hanging, where it would contrast nicely with your grey walls. I don't mind envelope-pushing with rug sizes and I would consider laying down more rugs of the same size for a sort of large-format FLOR look but as it is, there isn't enough rug there.

Layer a rug underneath for a "trim," just big enough to reach the couch and the same length on all sides and it should expand the visual field so it doesn't look too small.

Just move the rug -- so it's only partially under the left side (in the picture) of the table. Move it away from the couch and toward the console.

I think that will balance the room better, and the rug won't look quite so "chintzy".

this peanut votes too small. till you find it larger (here's hoping) maybe try it in a different spot. craigslist has a "wanted' category. i've used it and actually scored a couple things i was looking for.

I once heard an interior designer say that a rug should be at a size where the couch can have 2 legs on a rug 2 legs off. Which makes sence cause the point of a rug is for warmth underfoot.

@bepsf, my 5x8 rug visually separates the living area from the sleeping area in my studio apartment. An 8x10 would blur the borders and combine the spaces, and a 9x12 would qualify as wall-to-wall carpeting. So, for me, a 5x8 - 6x9 size works best.

@REMdc, why not pounce on one of the larger versions of your fab rug listed on eBay? You could always sell the wee one.

As for the coffee table, it was a Crate & Barrel find from about 3 years ago.

I'll make sure to submit a new photo when I've settled on a larger rug - I've definitely appreciated all the feedback.

forgive me if this was already suggested -
My thought was to get a second run, same size and a solid color of one of the colors in the rug. Place the table centered on the seam between them. Looks like a choice, not a mistake and you can have a rug that goes under the couch (the solid, I'd think).
