Good Questions: Perfect Seating Choice for Oddly Shaped Room?

LorenFloorplan.jpg

ATDC reader Loren is back for more advice on seating for her oddly shaped living room:

"After all the great responses to my question about layout for my oddly shaped living room, I've finally come up with a couple of options to consider. However, these are reliant on finding the right pieces to make them look the way I want them to.

Right now that means I'm on a quest for the perfect sofa/seating arrangement around a TV mounted on the eight-foot wall that backs up against the bathroom.

I kind of like the idea of using a small sectional to create flow and separation for this part of the room. I love the look and functionality (a sleeper *and* a storage ottoman!) of the the Dawson sectional from Room and Board, but not the price tag. So my first question is does anyone know of any lower-cost but still reasonably quality alternatives?

As an alternative, I'm considering the Goodwin collection from West Elm, probably a combination of the sleeper sofa and the armchair. Even with those I'll have to wait for them to go on sale, but that gives me time to save a bit. I'm not always sold on West Elm's durability and comfort, however. Does anyone have any experience with the Goodwin line?

Thanks! Loren"

Loren, we love the functionality of the Dawson, but can appreciate your budgetary concerns. We're sharing this question with our readers who may have experiences to share with either line...

Have you checked local furniture and department stores? Sometimes you can find pretty similar stuff for much more affordable prices.

There's always the MÃ…NSTAD corner sofabed with storage from IKEA. I can't attest to its durability but it isn't a bad price.

Try Craigslist - particularly in nearby communities where there are lots of foreclosures...
...folks are unloading nearly-new furniture like crazy now.

don't just go for sectionals

do a sofa facing the TV, like a bantam sofa, and put 2 chairs on the right (bottom of your floorplan)

if you're not a home theater junkie i would recommend mounting your TV at an angle facing the rest of the room so you have more flexible options on seating

I think a small sofa and one cool chair along with a flat panel tv and perhaps an oversize ottoman for party seating is all this small room needs. If you want, I can send a sketch.

Getting a good sofa used on craigslist is definitely the way to go. Goodwin is gorgeous but make sure the structure is kiln-dried hardwood and it is a sturdy foam cushion. If it isn't, you don't want it. I recommend sofas by Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams and Desiron as well. Lots of places are having sales right now as well!
