Where to Find Wine Crates?

wine-crate.gif

Decorating with wine crates is a not-so-secret secret DIY idea here at Apartment Therapy, but where are they to be found? As the demand increases, the supply seems to become more elusive...

As much as we wish there was an easy solution — or some place where you could pick up a dozen — it seems to be a matter of antique-hunting patience and persistence:

• Call local wine shops and liquor stores and ask if they will give them away, sell them or neither. If they won't part with them, ask if they know where other crates can be found. We scored one little crate at a local Safeway and are currently using it to store bottles upright on top of our fridge. (The top of the fridge isn't the best place for wine storage, but it's all inexpensive wine we'll drink pretty fast. The good wine hides in the closet.)

• Poke around your nearest Goodwill.

• Shop Winepine.com or eBay.com, both of which sell wine crates for storage, as well as for the label on the box.

• Search Craigslist.com often.

• If you're really desperate, we have written before about the IVAR box at IKEA.

We plan to collect some wine crates this summer and pile them up to make end tables with book storage.

Does anyone know of any wine crate treasure troves in the DC area?

I have about a dozen of those (two of them actually that exact wine) making up my outdoor container garden. They warped a bunch at first, but after some reinforcement are doing great.

Check out your local wine store. It may take time and multiple visits but they're the ones who have plenty to share.

Try a bigger store. My small local store has limited space and breaks them up and won't give them away, but my Total Wine & More sells them, I think for $4.

I have two that fit under my console in my dining room...extra storage for 24 bottles!

I'd highly recommend stopping by your local wine shop. Thing to know though, most (not all, obviously) wood crates come from the Bordeaux region in France. Wood crates are fairly rare in other parts so not all wine stores will have them. Also, wine clubs are a good source, just call them up or stop by and ask. They might even be able to save some for you if you can wait a bit.

I did this for a little project at some point and K&L in San Francisco very nicely saved me 6-8 crates in really good shape. I also got some from a wine club on Harrison street. I walked by and there was a stack outside, I asked if I could take them and they said it was no problem that they were just throwing them away. :))

Happy crate hunting!
Alex.

I have wine crates all over: bookcases, nightstand, garden containers, mounted on bike racks. I'm pretty crated out so I'll share my DC source: Schneider's on Capitol Hill. They place them on top of a freezer chest just to the right of their front door. It's first come first serve, so you just have to stop by now and again. If you're lucky you can catch as many as six crates at a time.

oh, btw, the Total Wine and More I get mine at is near Landmark in Alexandria. They are near the front, above the cardboard boxes.

We get ours a Wide World of Wines in Georgetown/Glover Park. They usually have a bunch sitting near the door. We buy a bit of wine there and they have always been happy for us to take a few. The folks there are really lovely so I think that even if you weren't buying a bunch of wine they would give you a few for free if you offered to pay for them.

You forgot to mention the most fun option, which is to buy wine by the crate!

Lindsey speaking: I discovered a section at the McLean Total Wine and more, also. They sell for $4.95 a box.
