When browsing though The Container Store recently, we were struck by how eco-unfriendly the stacks of plastic bins must be (and thought guiltily of the ones we have stashed under the bed). Just as we resigned ourselves to being irresponsible in the storage department, we got an email from The Container Store touting their line of eco-friendly storage options...
The earth friendly storage options are conveniently gathered together on the website for the lazy among us. We think the bamboo boxes and newsprint baskets are great, but love the biodegradable plastic trashcans from Umbra pictured above!

We're delighted to see that more and more companies are focusing on eco-friendly products; the easier it is to be responsible consumers, the more people are likely to embrace the lifestyle. Have any of you picked up some of these earth friendly organizational tools? If so, please share your experiences in the comments...
How cute the blue trashcan is!

The Umbra trashcan is also at Urban Outfitters which credits the artwork to Joshua Davis.
I was disappointed when I saw this in person. I guess the artwork is applied as some kind of wrap (Container Store website says it's "foil printed") and the seam looks really sloppy.
Boo.

The trash cans are by Joshua Davis. He's an awesome designer. When I saw them at the container store I had to grab one (the blue one but, I'm might get the other two since they match other rooms in my place). You should check out his work at, http://www.joshuadavis.com
They are also made of biodegradable plastic!

Buying less stuff also means less to organize and fewer products to buy to organize them. (Not that I'm against this; good storage helps maximize space, and having a small place is one of the best things you can do for the environment.)

Biodegradable stuff still requires energy to manufacture and bring to market. Also, "biodegradable" does not mean that it wasn't made from all new materials or is earth friendly in any way, shape, or form until you eventually redecorate and throw it away.

I was also disappointed in the quality (the seam) of the Umbra cans.

The Container Store has some great Eco-friendly products right now. Their recycle newsprint bins have an amazing look to them. They traditionally hold CDs or DVDs, but really you could use them in many areas of the house.
The Feathergrain Phoenix wood bins are very cool. I'm loving the style with handles but they also come with lids. Use them in your closets to hold pet supplies, collections, equipment, craft supplies - idea for organizing if you don't want plastic bins.
They also have a great desktop office collection right now created from recycled fiber board covered in the very hot 'plum' linen color we're seeing everywhere this fall. I've blogged about these items you can see them here http://tinyurl.com/cs-bins or you can find them on the Container Store's website.
Cheers - Scott
