Free TV Recycling for DC Residents

If you are one of the many who have recently purchased new TVs for the now-delayed digital transition, the DC government wants to help you help the planet. If you bring your old TV to the Fort Totten Transfer Station (4900 Bates Road NE) or the Benning Road Transfer Station (3200 Benning Road NE), you can recycle it for free...

Both stations accept TVs for recycling on Saturdays from 8am to 3pm. Please note that TV screens must be intact- not cracked, punctured, or shattered- in order to be accepted.

If your TV has a lot of life left in it, you may prefer to explore options for reuse rather than recycling. Listing your TV on Craigslist or Freecycle is easy, and eliminates the need for you to move the TV. If you have access to your own transportation, you might check with local retirement homes, schools or shelters to see if they can use your old TV.

Mom is donating her old TV (along with a digital converter box) to SOME (So Others Might Eat). We would love to hear about other charities or organizations that are accepting donations of old TVs- please leave a comment if you have any recommendations.

Does anyone have any ideas where televisions can be recycled in Chicago?? Have a large one taking up lots of space in the basement- doesn't work but is intact.

Thanks!

I bought a lcd tv for myself for Christmas. My old tv was only 8 years old and worked great. I didn't want my old tv to be thrown out (stores do that when taking old tvs when new ones are delivered), so I listed it on Freecycle.com. There was much interest, and was happy to see it go to someone who will enjoy it for years to come.

I drove for an hour and a half to both of these places on a Saturday and one wasn't even a recycling site, while the other was gated and padlocked. I don't think your information is correct!

We tried going there one Saturday when this place first opened up and had the same experience. Cannot figure out where on earth this place is. No signage existed for it at all.
