Napkin Catch Placemat by Josh Jakus

josh_placemat_orange.jpg

Given our unfortunate tendency to spill at dinner, we are always on the lookout for fun placemats to help protect the finish and add some zest to our dining room table. Made from recycled rubber, these fun placemats satisfy our desire to remain eco-friendly as well as table-friendly...

Designed by Californian Josh Jakus, these clever placemats feature a built-in napkin ring that can be popped flat for easy storage. The placemats are 100% rubber (made from 30% post-industrial waste) and measure 18" W x 12" H. Though the bright orange is no longer available, you can still purchase the blue or green placemats online at Branch for $19 each.

Doesn't putting a big opening in the middle of a placemat defeat the function?

Yes, and the napkin ring thingy is so far from the edge of the placement that it would be a real pain with big plates.

I get this as a conceptual thing, but really? $9?? 19???

seems like some crazy process would have to be used to recycle rubber and turn it bright colors, since most rubber is black...

Seems pretty pointless. I'd spend the $19 on some food.

It's beautiful!! If you think about it, after you remove your napkin to eat, you just lay the ring part flat back into the mat. So by the time you get into the messy food part of the meal, it functions perfectly as a placemat. Love it!
