Katie & Eddie's Family Chic
House Call

Name: Katie Kelly McCormack & family
Location: neighborhood of Del Ray in Alexandria, Virginia

I am an interior designer living in Alexandria's Del Ray neighborhood with my husband Eddie and our three sons. Our home is an early 1930's American four-square, built when the neighborhood was centered around the local railroad (the area on our street where the trains used to roll through is now a playground and dog park). I would describe my style as 'Family Chic,' as I strive to inject elegance and warmth into everyday practicality.

Chris' Mid-Century Modern Chalet
House Call

Name: Chris Haines
Location: Great Cacapon, West Virginia (90 miles from DC & Baltimore)

When I purchased this 80s-era modular home in 2004, it had no windows along the southern exposure, wall-to-wall carpeting, an unfinished basement, and faux woodgrain styrofoam ceiling beams. I completely gutted the house and refitted it as a mid-century modern chalet. I added wood to almost every surface (ceilings, floors, walls) and opened up the view with several new windows.

Kristy's Family Home on Miami Beach
House Call

Name: Kristy & family (5 + dog)
Location: Miami Beach, Florida

Last year, my family of 5 plus one poodle moved from a sprawling country house to a 900+ square feet rented, art-deco era condo on Miami Beach. Before moving, we gave away almost everything that we owned. We only kept the essentials, the sentimental, and the absolutely love-it items.

Catherine's Cozy Equestrian Live-Work Condo
House Tour

1 c living half full.jpg
Name: Catherine, Sophie (roommate), and Dewey the dog
Location: Adams Morgan, DC
Size: 965 square feet — 2 bedroom, 2 bath
Years lived in: owned, 1 year

We first met Catherine when she shared her hilarious feather light disaster with us. Intrigued by her DIY spirit and fine sense of humor, we asked to see a bit more of her home. Part clean-lined cool, part cozy country, and fully unpretentious, Catherine's sunny condo displays both her playful personal style and budget-conscious resourcefulness. And, of course, subtle tributes to all things equine.

Jennifer's Cozy Urban Country Home
House Call

Name: Jennifer
Location: Baltimore, Maryland

I subscribe to just about every shelter magazine available, and read many decorating blogs for inspiration, and therefore, I have ended up with no exact style. Every week I want to update what I thought I loved the week before. Most of our home is full of antique finds from tiny stores here in Baltimore, my sister's home decor store in New Jersey, and sprinkled with big box store items.

Erica & John's Fishtown Vision
House Call

Name: Erica & John
Location: Fishtown — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I'm submitting our house as a final homage to it (the house itself). We've just put it on the market because both my husband and I are tiring of our long commutes, but we love the house, and our neighborhood. we'll be sad to leave when the fateful day comes. When we bought the house in 2003, the entire third floor was gutted, and everything was painted white. We've managed to make our major renovations on a shoe-string budget, and are pretty happy with what we've done.

Location: Washington, DC
Size: 960 square feet
Years lived in: 10 months

Wendy Carter went looking for a home in downtown, Washington, DC last year, and was surprised when she found this Adams Morgan rowhouse. The walls were painted red, yellow, lime green, blue and khaki — and Carter loved color. "I had to ask myself, do I want this house because of the paint, or because I like the house?" she says.

Lori's Renovated Richmond Cottage
House Call

Name: Lori
Location: Westover Hills neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia

When my husband and I moved into our home during the summer of 2006, we had just moved from an apartment in D.C. and had no idea what to do with an entire house! With an intense real estate market (at the time), we didn't have a lot of houses to choose from and still be in the neighborhood we liked, right next to the James River. We ended up buying this house, but it needed a LOT of work. We set to work almost as soon as the ink dried on the closing papers.

Walking into William and Stephen's home I was immediately able to identify the terrific merriment of colors in their home.
