Each of the eight rooms reflects the designer's luxurious interpretation of a specific historic district in Washington. We're taking notes on how to use the deep, rich color palettes used throughout to usher in the cozy glamor of a DC autumn.

My home is a mini-design lab, where I've tried out many of the inspiring ideas shown on Apartment Therapy. I replaced the barn door with sliding bookcases — my version of a secret passageway — and tried out my favorite colors and ideas. It's a work in progress and you can see which AT ideas I tried out and learn from my mistakes.

The Coles' Carriage House Turned Art Studio

Artists Susan and Robert Cole turned an old carriage house into their studio space in the city. Robert Cole sculpts in metal and creates custom metal pieces for homes. He crafted all the metal shown in the studio, including the staircase and doors.

Kate's Renovated Family Home

We searched for a year and finally found our diamond in the rough. It has undergone many cosmetic renovations until we found out we were going to have a baby. Then we gutted the house and took nine months to open up walls and make a large common area for everyone to hang out in. We love to have close friends & family over and the new space adds great energy to the party.

Chuck & Jessica's 196 Square Foot Green Shed

Chuck is an architect and furniture designer and Jessica is a painter, so their shed was built out of necessity to provide additional workspace behind their home. Built from the ground up and using many salvaged materials, the shed keeps in line with their philosophy on environmental responsibility. And given Chuck's occupation, it's no surprise their shed won the International Shed of the Year award for 2009.

What I love most about my home, and the building, is that the spaces were left raw, with concrete floors and ceilings, exposed ductwork and original columns, ready for creative expression.
