Most of you did NOT like the pink and purple painted house we showed you in Durham, North Carolina. But how do you feel about this narrow house in Georgetown? The Georgetown house is painted a deeper pink and a paler, more blueish purple than one in Durham. Do you like the Georgetown color combination? Survey and more photos below the jump...

Normally I'm a traditionalist when it comes to exterior paint, but dare I say, this works on this quirky little house! My goodness, I bet you could lay on the floor and touch both sides of the house at once.

Personally not a fan of pink, but almost always a fan of colorful!

For me this doesnt work and I'm glad I'm not the neighbor. When houses are jammed together like this I think there should be a blending but not match match.

As a general rule, I'm not a fan of anything that looks like it pulled its palette from a strip of Lisa Frank stickers.
I much prefer the sweet pale yellow of the house on the far right. It's fresh and cheery without being wacky or out of step with the neighborhood and its historic homes. Yellow houses with bright red doors are my favorite color combo in beautiful Georgetown.

I'm especially not a fan of the "Funky Lady" house numbers. I'm all for a sense of humor or quirk, but this looks like something made by Hasbro or Mattel.

I have to applaud the owner's sense of fun. S/he realized that the narrow house front presented the opportunity to do something fun and went for it. I'm not a fan of the color palette (I LOATHE purple and pink together) but I'll admit the house is a nice surprise sandwiched between its more sober neighbors. I expect a good witch is inside, making cider and baking gingerbread.

i love it! how fun.

When you live in Georgetown and are governed by the historic preservation guidelines that restrict everything you do, you have to get your individuality where you can.
Besides, there is no way that a house of that width could ever be serious, even if it were painted in more traditional colors.

I love it, too. Good for the owner for doing what he/she wanted. After all, it's just paint and color.

I love color... whatever color makes you happy to come home to, do it! It does remind me of a doll house I bought for my daughter once! A happy house.

I'm not in love with it, but I love houses with bright colors. I like the purple combo, but I think it might be a little overkill with the pink door and funky numbers. This house is better suited for a hipper part of town, like Logan Circle, U St or Adams Morgan.

Yowza -- when I live in DC, I was right around the corner from that house. It used to be a more traditional color scheme (I think white with black shutters) -- without it's bold colors, it looked quaint and quirky. Now it's just screaming for attention, like a nasty brat.

Love it. Live in the DC area. Wish everyone would go with color in a big way. Imagine that street with a row of brights instead of the variations on polite beige.

Maybe if it were Easter every day of the year. Otherwise, no.
view LinePlaneVolume's profile
Mid-C Frank, I must have been your neighbor, because I recognize it too. I like it, though. It's nice to see this little house not taking itself too seriously.

If you're living in a house that narrow, I think you get to paint it whatever color you want! I personally wouldn't want a pink door or purple shutters, but I think I could live with the lavender siding. Looks like there are some other colorful houses on the street too.

I like colorful exterior, but this is too Easter colored. Not hot.

I live around the corner from this house and I often walk by it. I love its funny shape and wild colors!

It's happy! Maybe living in a rowhouse in Baltimore has made me appreciate the "painted ladies" a bit more than I used to.

It's growing on me, I'd tone down the door a little. I think it's crying out for some funky neighbors.

Sticks out like a sore thumb, and not in a nice way.

I love the pink door, and I could even handle the purple shutters. Don't like the pale purple... Maybe if it were pale yellow, or brighter blue... Or just white.

I love it, rated it Hot, not the colour scheme I would have chosen, but I wouldn't have done quieter, just different.
I don't think small houses or close-set houses have an obligation to be bland.
I would love to live on a block of candy-coloured houses. Mine would be more citrus-y, that's all.

It makes the house unique. Who cares what everyone else thinks.
view lesterisagirl's profile
I appreciate the owner's sense of fun and unorthodox approach. But that said... yikes. A daycare facility? Wonder if the owner dots his/her i's with hearts or smiley faces?

I love it. It's a nice suprise, and really makes you wonder who lives there, and what the inside looks like.
And the house is so narrow you wouldn't even notice it, otherwise.
view ohjodi's profile
I really like it. I wish people painted their houses other colors than just white or yellow. I think you find more of that south of the border. I think it makes everything happier :)
view beehappy2005's profile
I think on a house this size, it kind of works. Anything larger, no.
view Mlle Kate's profile
It looks out of place with the surrounding houses, and not in a good way. I think it's an eyesore.

Color scheme aside, we need to get this house into Small Cool and find out how they make it work inside!

" ... yeah---the blue house with the pink door, and periwinkle shutters ... you can't miss it."
Not my style, but I'd like to be friends with the person who did it.

I didn't think i was going to like it but I actually think this little teeny house is cute. The colors work because it is so small.
view design_wonderland's profile
I like the magenta door, but the lavender siding and purple shutters are too much. It's as if a 5 year-old girl picked the colour palette. I'm also scared of those curly-cue house numbers. It's okay to be daring with your exterior design choices, but an entirely different thing to be so over the top.

i'm a far bigger fan of personal expression and zeal than i dislike those colors.
view scenicartisan's profile
also, i'm digging all the recent posts that have such great wall colors in them.
white walls are death to the creative soul.
view scenicartisan's profile
At least it adds a punch of color to an otherwise bland block, and a much needed jolt of interest. I hope it suitably annoyed the (boringly beige) neighbors.
view phaedrus's profile
That is like the cutest house ever! I bet the owner's personality is just as fun and awesome. :) Yay for being different!
view Automatic Blonde's profile
A punch of color is great- but I'd prefer a different combination. Something with more dignity- like indigo blue and orangy-red.
view greenmeansgo's profile
I think this is a fun idea in theory, especially if the neighborhood featured other candy-colored dwellings. However, I am not quite so sure I would be cool with this if the owners were my neighbors.
view Hydra's profile
It's a historic neighborhood. I'm surprised and disappointed that they allowed this.
view ftpansy's profile
In the right suburb maybe, but personally I'd move if my neighbours ruined my view like this.
view littleinkpot's profile
Love it. It's got character and it is adorable.
view susy1's profile
those aren't my favorite colors, but they suit that quirky little house perfectly
view sunan's profile
I think the color combination makes the house stick out like a sore thumb. I can't help but feel there are other colors which could have been used to to brighten it up that didn't remind me so much of clown paint. I agree with a few other people that it just doesn't seem to work with the other houses around it.
In Ireland - yes, quirky coloring makes for a beautiful visual, but in this situation, it's too drastic for the other houses surrounding it.
view Monpetitchevre's profile
I'm sort of indifferent. It kind of makes me think of a barbie house.
I'd prefer my neighbours to have this house than a house that was "normal" but poorly maintained, especially in such close quarters.
view Angus's profile
I bet it makes the other houses want to punch it in the face.
view jojofunbun's profile
...but good for the owner for embracing that look.
view jojofunbun's profile
I think it looks quirky and fun! Yes it probably has annoyed the neighbors, but it at least the owners have a sense of humor!
view greycottage's profile
The pink door is too much -- I like the violet/purple colors however.
view DC_Chica's profile
How about periwinkle and sage green and saturated turquoise?
Or hot pink (yuk) with orange and yellow-orange and a touch of red?
No opposition to bright, just hate THESE colors together.
And while I'm not crazy about the idea of historic districts bossing homeowners around with their own version of "good taste", I do think the owners of row houses that are connected should come to some kind of consensus as to how to distinguish each unit without making it's neighbors look out of place.

This is great, but maybe I've been in San Francisco too long.
I think the darker purple shutter are what throws it off - if those were white, the whole thing might look less childish, but I still have to give them props for having some guts.

I love it! These narrow row houses remind me of the ceramic collectible ones---how cool to live in one!
