Adam has worked to combine his love of music and art into a clean, comfortable home. Over the last year of living in his new space, Adam has been trying out pieces and artwork. Adam uses his musical instruments and travel photos as art and decor. He also has some lovely furniture pieces and artwork from his parents...

To fit his design aesthetic and love of a calm, modern space, Adam has visited many local stores and sources and gotten help from Vastu on 14th Street NW. Adam organized his den to serve also as a guest room, office, and music practice room. He is also happy with the terrace layout and decor, but intends to keep working on the living room and bedroom.
AT SURVEY
My Style: Comfortable Modern.
Inspiration: Travel and music.
Favorite Element: I love the way the den came together. Working with Eric Kole from Vastu, I was able to turn the small space into a very personalized and livable area.
Biggest Challenge: Editing down things I owned in order to keep the clean modern look I was aiming to achieve. After donating and throwing out a lot of stuff, I was able to come up with some simple storage solutions to keep the clutter to a minimum. When I finally get around to doing more with the bedroom, I’ll purchase a storage bed that will give me additional space to stash things.
What Friends Say: “It’s very you.” Which I take as a compliment.
Biggest Embarrassment: The bedroom is currently just an assortment of furniture items that I wasn't ready to get rid of, but that didn’t work anywhere else in my condo. The bedroom will be getting re-done in the new year.
Proudest DIY: The art in my den. It’s a series of four photos I took of graffiti while in Europe in 2007. They are great representations of part of my aesthetic and I feel that they work with the space very well.
Biggest Indulgence: The two David Edwards’ Lolita chairs upholstered in flannel suede. More than any other piece of furniture I have, those get the most compliments and are extremely comfortable.
Best Advice: The design team at Vastu has been a continuous source of great advice as they helped make my vision for a modern living space into one that is functional, practical, comfortable and fun.
Dream Source: The entire Knoll catalog of furniture and textiles for living spaces and Boffi for the kitchen.

Resources:
Appliances: The fridge, stove/range, microwave and dishwasher are all from GE’s Profile line.
Furniture:
Living Room: Knoll Planter coffee table, side table, and handkerchief chair. The coffee table has a glass top and the side table has a marble top; Steven Anthony Dunbar sofa and ottoman; David Edward armless Lolita Chair.
Bedroom: The majority of my furniture is from Vastu. There are two pieces in my bedroom, the armoire and a blue chair, that are from Random Harvest.
Window Treatments: Hunter Douglas Solar Shades from WindowWears.
Artwork: Other than some photographs that I took and one of my guitars hung up in my den, most of the other art has been gifted to me from my parents’ collection. The living room wall space is a work in progress.
Paint: Benjamin Moore Mohair in the living room and London Fog in the den.

I love that planter and the rumpled bedcovers. A very cool place without being pretentious. I enjoyed seeing the artwork which at a glanced looked all perfect on the wall and then you see the content. Nice way to inject humor and personality into the space.

Gosh we're practically neighbors.

The lolita chairs are gorgeous - nice indulgence. I'd love a splash of color over the desk/computer area.

It's lovely, but you need a bed frame! That nekked box spring is a bit too batchelor-esque for my taste!

Cool! A Carrie Bradshaw closet that you have to walk through to get to the bathroom.

I feel like a total copy cat because I love that coffee table and it is one my "when i win the lotto" list. Any information on that taupe sofa? I am searching for a perfect mix of clean lines and supreme comfiness and that sofa looks like it can do the job.

Really like those Lolita chairs and the gray couch in the office area -- and, of course, the deck. Obviously the br is still a work in progress.
What I don't like -- and it's not his fault -- is the completely uninspired interior space. The outside is cool, sort of a modernized mews, but the Home Depot kitchen and bath are seriously blah. When I saw the exposed ductwork, I was thought we'd see a industrial-type space...DC is warm enough for exposed beams and concrete floors, maybe even casement windows...
I'd rethink the beige couch in the living area. It's a little too massive for the small space.

Adam -- you are hot and so is your apartment!
I love the glass coffee table and especially the tiny lemon tree in the yellow pot.
Very nicely done!

I do not if they are original but the glass coffee table & Montmartre painting in the bathroom are awesome..

It's hard to say this, because you are a total babe, but...I think the pics above the sofa should be closer together and slightly lower. Also, some color/art is needed in the kitchen. Otherwise, I think you are on your way!

i'm trying to stifle my urge to tell adam to make his bed but i can't hold it in

I does look calm and I'm all for neutral color palettes, but there's too much beige and too much medium-light value going on. I like what you're doing, but I'd like to see the color palette look a little more "crisp."
To stick with neutrals, try painting some rooms a very pale gray. For a little more "energy" but still an overall calm feel, try painting one room (or a featured wall) a dusty blue-gray in a medium-light value. Blue is the color-compliment of that warm beige, yet is a soothing color in its own right.

I really appreciate the picture ledge under the guitar. It helps keeps the guitar from floating, and a frame would be silly. I wouldn't move the photos opposite the guitar -- I like that they balance each other out spatially.
I like the art collection, especially the graffiti photos.
I like the slipper chair pairing opposite the sectional. But I don't understand the layout of the space -- there are two sectionals and a loveseat -- that's a lot of sofa! -- but clearly they are not in the same room. I'm guessing you have a second bedroom? [suggestion to AT -- a floor plan to go with house tours would be helpful].
Keep the bedside table -- give it a coat of tung oil and you're all set. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tung_oil
The lemon tree in the yellow pot is my very favorite part of your space. It made me smile!

oh Adam, your rumpled bed, your t-shirts, and guitars are so charming. But I really must thank you for sharing your glass Platner Coffee Table. Thank you so much; I love it more than anything (but not anyone, of course).

Oh, do I covet that terrace... upholstered outdoor furniture! What a dreamy thought, here in Seattle. A fine job- kudos from "the other Washington."

Ugh, I didn't even bother to look through the rest of the photos if the best pic of the place AT can come up with of the place is a beige couch, glass coffee table, cream shaggy rug, stainless steel fridge. What is this, a 2002 Freedom catalogue? Double Ugh.

Lovely space & thanks for sharing. It's nice to see DC spaces!! (my neck of the woods)

Nice place, but could use some color. Don't hide behind neutrals, use them to make colorful pieces stand out.

What is with all the negative comments around here lately?
Every post this week featuring someones house has been full of vitriol and backlash.

It looks nice enough (and def better than my DC apt!), but there's nothing special about it. It's only slightly less generic than a model condo.
That said, thanks to the owner for showing it, and to AT. More DC house tours!!

Nesagwa I totally agree. AT comments have gotten progressively meaner and meaner over the past few weeks. I think people must be stressed about the holidays or something. But it's made this website not as fun to go to :(

I like the apartment and the table but the view of Montmartre was 'Made in China'.

It takes a special kind of douchebag to drop by and leave a snarky remark about one's home, hiding behind internet anonymity. At least have the cajones to back up the remarks with a link to who you are in your profile.
Adam, the place looks fantastic. Great job.

Thanks for all the feedback. The Montmartre painting was purchased by my parents while in Paris in the 70s. I love the color it adds to the bathroom. I am currently looking for more interesting and colorful art to add more character to my condo. I will be looking for more paintings and photos to decorate with the next time I get to travel.
