Occupation: photographer
Location: Washington DC
Size: 950 sq ft 1 bedroom, den and 2 bathroom loft; condo building built in 2005
Years lived in: 3 years
Photographer Robert Dodge had always decorated his home traditionally, until he moved into his current loft. The exposed pipes, high ceilings and huge modern windows have inspired Robert to change his style. So since moving into the brand new building in 2005, Robert has slowly been transitioning his traditional decor to contemporary. When he works on photography shoots, Robert turns his living room into a portrait studio...

The natural Western light from his floor-to-ceiling living room windows is ideal for portraits, especially on cloudy days. Robert enjoys photographing at home, and his cats Winston and Tiddles also love the light in the loft.
Robert's favorite photographs - both his work and his friends' - hang next to paintings he picked up in Hawaii, Vietnam and Provincetown. These are Robert's preferred vacation spots and he is in the process of compiling his travel photographs from Vietnam into a book. We can't wait to see the results!
AT SURVEY
Favorite Aspect: the huge windows and curved wall.
Proudest Aspect: combining my artwork and paintings purchased on trips. The paintings were found in places I like and express things about me.
Proudest DIY: the painting and walls. I will never do that again myself. I felt like it would never end!
Biggest Embarrassment: mismatched menagerie of furniture and the stacks of magazines and paper. Too much clutter! I love minimalism but I am not a minimalist person.
What Friends Say: this is a sexy apartment.
Best Advice Given or Received: I received this advice and then gave it: Life is a process; it's 99% process and 1% results. So if you don't enjoy the process, you'll be miserable. This is true with art, life and creating your home.
Dream Resources: new apple computer with the big designer screen and the perfect L-shaped sofa, which I haven't yet found.

Hello fellow DC'er! Thanks for sharing your apartment.
What's your feeling on the barn door? I'm in need of something similar for a bathroom door and I'm concerned that it's not possible to hang it tightly enough to provide the kind of privacy it needs. What do you think?
And do you know anything about your bard door hardware?
Thanks!

ugly.

Thanks for sharing your lovely felines! Animals and how they take up space inside dwellings always makes me very happy and smile.

Cute kitties!

The dining chairs seem a bit too "heavy", especially with the glass table.
Also, it is your duty as a man to get rid of that CRT and shoehorn a 46" flat screen TV somewhere in the living area.

Too bad the island's large half-wall (probably) encloses the plumbing stack for the kitchen sink. A freestanding island would really open the space up.

Hey Easyenough, we just put a barn door for our bathroom and I love it. Made a very small bathroom comfortable. The door is wider than the opening, so when it's closed it's not like you can see in through the cracks. We wondered about it too - and were thinking about installing some felt strips along the door edge to make some sort of seal when but I see we now that we won't need to. I think being a solid core door it feels secure and is a decent sound barier. As far as hardware a google search for sliding door hardware will give you plenty of vendors. There are lots of really expensive nice looking exposed wheel tracks, but we opted for a more basic one that was more in the $200 price range. Hubby bought it though so don't know the vendor. And then for handles and a locking device I just picked up some inset closet door pulls and a simple little slide lock that we'll mount onto the door casing and the lock will slide into a hole in the door. Good luck with your door!

Great job!!! I love the paint color on the curved wall (and love the curved wall too!). You should be proud of yourself.

I don't think there's anything special about this appartment. Many dull objects thrown together between dull-painted walls. Absolutely uninspiring. Pity for the cats.

Nothing classier than porn in your office.

I loathe AT's slideshow format.
Hideous and annoying.

Here we go with the catty comments. I picture those who make such comments to be overweight with cold cream and curlers in their hair. Miserable uncheery people. I like your place and the kitties are adorable.
