Rachel's Chic Dorm Room
House Call

Name: Rachel
Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Welcome to my college dorm room! In places like college dorm rooms, where everything can feel so cold and manufactured, it was very important to me to create a space that felt very comfortable. I am a lover of art (especially photography), traveling, and interior design.

My space is filled with photographs I took last year while studying abroad in France. Besides reflecting my interests, I wanted my room to be a space where my friends can relax and feel comfortable. A special problem I encountered was the size of my space! The room is not only small, but it is an awkward shape.

Thanks, Rachel!

Very nice! Almost makes me long for those dormitory days again...almost. :)

it looks like a nice space to spend time in, rachel, unlike most dorm rooms i've seen that made me want to repeatedly bash my head into the wall. the light especially seems lovely, which you must appreciate, what with your love of photography and all.

Lovely! A far cry from my college dorm room back in the '70s! I really like your orange 'necklace tree.'

I wish I would have gotten into interior design while I was in college. My dorm room was.... eclectic? In the worst possible sense of the word.

Fantastic looking dorm room! The dorm rooms where I went to school were aqua or pale yellow cinder block walls and gray VCT flooring. No matter what you did, it was like putting lipstick on a pig.

You're very lucky! This is a great bright space :)

I have the orange tree thing in my room as well - it's a great color!

Thanks for sharing Rachel! You've done a splendid job of showing how simply repeating a pattern and color throughout a space can create a wonderful sense of cohesion. Lovely!

It's beautiful! I especially like the desk and the bookcase. That burnt orange colour works so well. I can't believe this is a dorm! My dormitory experience was less than lovely -- very dark, with cement walls and floors. Ugh.

Small? We would have had two people sharing this same size room back in my day!

Where did you get the frames that your pictures are in? 8 x 10s?

Small? This is no definition of small. My room growing up was smaller than this and I shared it! My dorm room was probably two-thirds this size and I shared it with two others!

Nice. Love the orange rug.

Biggest darned dorm room for one person I've ever seen.

Wow, that is one big dorm room. You were lucky to have such nice big windows and lots of space. Mine looked more like a prison with one tiny window, plus I had to share it with a cellmate..er roommate.

Great Job Rachel...I love black and white photos. It gives a more "artsy" look to a space.

Beautiful. The pillows on the floor really make it cozy.

When I was in college in NY my single was so small I had to sign a legal waiver stating I would not sue the college if I went crazy from lack of room to move. The room was a converted bathroom. The shower was my closet into which I fit a 4-drawer cardboard dresser. I had room for a bed with a desk at the end of it.

Very nicely done. You are, as stated, very fortunate to have such a large room! I was in the dorms myself a few years ago, and my room was about half this size.

It's lovely, large than my master bedroom that I share with the hubby! I like the colors you used as well, but using a white comforter makes it cozy as well.

I too love the orange jewelry tree, do you have a source for it?

Must have been spoiled, as my first dorm room (for two) was 15x15 with 9 or 10 foot ceilings, as it was in a historic building. People who paid extra could have the whole room to themselves. We're not space challenged in Indiana.

Charming...and I can't believe I'd ever say that about a dorm room, LOL! I had two other roommates in my dorm space and there were only paths between beds and desks. Love the flowers on window sill. Good job!!
