Rhoda's Southern Hospitality
House Call

Name: Rhoda of Southern Hospitality
Location: Birmingham, Alabama

Being from the South, I'm mostly a traditional decorator, but love to add some fun and sass into the mix whenever I can. I'm also a yardsale and thriftstore hound and have found some great things by re-purposing, re-painting, and generally rehabbing my found items to work in my house. And that makes for a nice eclectic mix, which is much more interesting than just going to the store and buying things new.

I share a lot of DIY projects on my blog, Southern Hospitality, and encourage my readers to think outside the box and to get out there and thrift. Good for the pocketbook and good for the soul! I love vintage things and enjoy bringing them home and giving them new life. From adding light fixtures, to recovering lampshades, I'm a DIYer all the way.

Thanks, Rhoda!

When it comes to decorating I'm a modernist, but that first photo is stunning and so inviting. Well done!

gaga for your laundry room. Never thought of adding style. Mine has always been function with little to no form. Time for a change!

This style is so NOT me, but I wish it were because your place is lovely. I find the laundry room and office esp. appealing--traditional with a big twist.

The dining room is my favorite. I love how you modernize traditional decor by using lots of white and pushing the notion of "matching textiles." That said, my personal taste has gone from traditional to much more modern/eclectic. I appreciate any style that blends a little of everything (like your dining room) rather than strictly adhering to a single style (like so many MCM fans are doing these days).

The dining room is really gorgeous. It has a certain formality, but it's also very welcoming. Lovely.

Do you remember the name of the paint color you used in that room? I love it.

share your blog address. Your house is fabulous. I'm not a big fan of tradtional but really liked your interpretation. There are lots of elements in all of the rooms that I adore. You have done a really great job blending your style with southern traditional. Share your blog address please.

Lovely style sense. I find both the laundry room and the dining room exceptionally engaging and charming. I love the idea of a laundry room that has so much style and warmth -- makes the idea of doing laundry a lot more inviting.

Ok, I answered my own question about the dining room paint color by looking at your blog. Thanks!

I love the rabbit weather vane! I'm sure the answer is no, but...did you by ANY chance get that at a store?

Hey, Christina, yes, I did get the rabbit weathervane at Target about 3 years ago. Waited til it was on closeout & snagged one. I haven't seen them lately though. You may check Ebay, as those bunnies multiplied all over the internet.

I love your style! While it wouldn't all work in my home, it's always fun to take a look at other styles.

I love the bedspread that the designer uses and have been looking for one like this for awhile. Does anyone know who makes this/what brand it is?

Hi, Sashi, that bedspread was a yardsale find, but it came from Target. I ordered the drapes to match at Target online, so you may still be able to get the comforter too. Check online!

My thought about many of the private home tours/house calls we see is that they know what they want to be when they grow, they're just not quite there yet. Nothing wrong with that...

But here...here is a fleshed out, fully-realized home. Kick ass.

I really like the way you mixed things up in the dining room-really fantastic. The sisal is the perfect foil for the sideboard. Really nicely done.
