We all are noticing the amazing Color Contest 2009 submissions we're receiving here at Apartment Therapy. We love color and have pops of color all throughout our home. We never shy away from it and wonder if other people are the same.

We recently re-painted and re-upholstered a chair that we found at a thrift store. It was the deal of the century (for us)- Chair: $2, Spray Paint: $3, IKEA Pillow Cover: $6, Grand Total: $11. The money was the easy part, the hard part was deciding on what color to paint the chair. Luckily, we both agreed right away that we wanted it to be bright with a graphic cushion. We love the outcome and we usually do this sort of thing and just sell the items. This time we plan on keeping it because of the bright color.
This project made me wonder if most people are keen on the idea of bright colors in their home. Using bright colors as accents (like our chair) is one of the easiest ways to incorporate color into a room. Even though we would have no problem painting an entire wall in a vibrant color.
Are you afraid of color in your home?

We're not affraid of it.... we just don't care for colorful rooms in general. I know the current trend is for bright rooms with tons of color pops, but to me, it frequently ends up feeling busy...... While I appreciate the design of many of these rooms, it simply isn't for us.
we prefer the graphic look of black and white.... or blending earthy browns/wood with grey tones and bright white. we DO have bright pops of red in a select few accessories and our bed linens, but overall, we prefer to keep things a smidge more subdued than most. I think the sharp juxtaposition of bright white against darker tones throughout our home provides a similar pop as a bright color...

I love color but prefer to keep my walls and floors neutral so I can accessorize colorfully til my heart's content.
Furniture, rugs, bedding, etc., though, are all bold and colorful in my house.

I LOVE color- even more so being a painter who happens to use very vibrant color!
However, now that we just bought a house, I find that I prefer white walls with bold pops of color elsewhere. For instance, the kitchen has white walls- and a bright chartreuse wall. The dining room has white walls, bright colorful vintage posters, bold multicolored Eames chairs, and an electric blue chandelier I just painted.

I'm with clampers- keep the basics neutral so you can be super-colorful elsewhere. It also makes it much easier when you want to shake things up! :)

being afraid and disliking something are two different things :O)

um, no. saturate, accent, pop, coordinate, flow, contrast, and compliment till your daddy takes the t-bird away. blindness runs in my family, so bring it like there's no tomorrow. i won't be regretting a beige life when my lights dim.

Heck no. In my childhood home, every room was decorated in a different, contrasting color. My current home tends to revolve around red and gold...it's not for the faint of heart!

Most certainly NOT. In fact, the rooms that appeal to me tend to be BRIGHT - orangey-yellow, indigo, cerise - I love colours that don't just whisper, they SHOUT.
Also, lighter shades with dark accents. My room, for instance, is a warm light purple with a light yellow feature wall, with black furniture (and one drawer unit - bright fire engine red with white drawers) and bright yellow bed linen (with a white duvet cover with really brightly coloured flowers on it). It... may not be very 'grown-up'? But hey, I like it!

Hi Kristen :)
I looked everywhere for an e-mail for you... this was the most recent post I could find (which I loved, by the way).
I just wanted to thank you for stopping by my blog and for your kind words. It was such a pleasant surprise and an honor to have to visit! I hope you will return :)
I so admire your photos and your contributions - just awesome!
And for the record, I absolutely LIVE for color! Color is the cheerfulness in life. It makes me so happy. I can't imagine what I would do without it!
Best Regards,
