Look! Finishing Touches Complete Art Deco Bathroom

DIYBathroom1.jpg

I kicked off DIY month by completing a couple of different projects over in Mom's apartment. The first project was in the bathroom which we redesigned last year to return to its art deco roots. One of biggest changes last year was getting the building to install a GFCI outlet in the bathroom; unfortunately, they covered that new outlet with terrible cream faceplate which we replaced with the brushed metal plate pictured above. The more we looked at it however, the more we knew it just wasn't right...

Then one happy day I received the new Rejunvenation catalog in the mail and found the perfect replacement- a classic porcelain faceplate. I ordered the black faceplate, but my delight when it arrived was soon tempered by the unfortunate realization that it didn't fit because the outlet was so close to the door trim. Finally this last weekend, I bought a chisel at Home Depot and went to town. Though there are a couple of paint touchups to be done, both Mom and I are happy with the results.

I don't know too much about art deco design, but are those two small surfaces above the sink part of the tile work? That is such a great idea!

That bathroom is so pretty! It's lucky you got a nice black and white combo tiles...I've seen the horrors of putrid pink with black !! (sorry for the unlucky ones!) Yuk!!!

Love the floor!

This is a great solution to a common problem! I love everything about your bathroom...the sink, medicine cabinet, wall tile/bath surround, the floor tile, shower curtain, and the trash can too!

I love the tile - very pretty combo. Only complaint is it seems everything in there is either white or black - maybe a color or two added with a rug and a small drink cup that is some bold color.

Very lovely :) I'm gearing up to redo my little bathroom so it's more in line with the rest of my 1920's Craftsman bungalow. Right now it's stuck firmly in the Laura Ashley 80's (not my doing!). I love the tilework!

I absolutely love the floor. I think when we add a master bath to our house (years from now, sadly) I will try to convince my partner that we need to do the black and white. I love it! :)

Thank everyone!

ChrisGal- we actually do have some pops of dark red on the walls not seen in these photos. The bathroom is teeny-tiny, but I might try to capture some additional photos for a future post...

What a trip! We live in DC (Mount Pleasant) and this is, basically, our bathroom. The black porcelain toothbrush holder and cup holder over the sink are built in, but modern toothbrushes are way to thick to fit in the holes.

We haven't replaced our outlet cover with the black porcelain one from Rejuvenation, but we actually have installed a light fixture from rejuvenation and that's now over the medicine cabinet. It's this one: http://www.rejuvenation.com/fixbshowW987/templates/displayer.phtml

I thought the fix was going to be replacing the cream flip switch and cream outlets with black or stainless. Why not do that?

Colleen-

Do you find that the switchplate sits further away from the wall than the metal one did? I ask because I have the white ceramic ones in my bathroom, and they fit oddly, almost like they need to be caulked in place?

You still need to replace the outlet & switch to match the plate. I think that's probably the reason why you didn't like your first choice and I think after you look at it for a while you're not going to like the second choice either.

I would have gone for white in both cases to make it disappear into the white wall.

Love those old bathrooms!

Love it! I have almost exact same tile work. Where did you get that fantastic shower curtain? Please tell...

I like the new look, but part of me wonders if it wouldn't have been easier to cut the tile instead.

I have that exact same sink in my bathroom (former 1920s hotel in Chicago).
