Scripted Furnishings

2-16-petrine-tinslay-via-em.jpg

The written word may barely be hanging onto paper during the days when email and texting has all but obliterated handwritten communication, but it's alive and well in today's furnishings. As graphics abound in all forms, we've especially enjoyed seeing this design trend spread around DC...

Simultaneously sophisticated and quirky, it's a great look for a modern city steeped in written tradition. We love how it can add a sense of whimsy and weight to an otherwise blank space — just like the original words on paper.

We think it would also make a great clock face...maybe a future DIY project?

Another stupid design - why write on your furniture? or the walls? Are we all back in grammar school?

As one with a degree in literature and a self-confessed bibliophile, I have to say that I love it, love it, love it, love it!!!!

L-O-V-E that rug in the first pic. Isn't it actually a rug or some sort of mat? Either way, where is it hiding?

The rug is great! I've always loved the use of words/text in decorating and that definatelly does it in a way thats not at all over the top.

I actually like this "scripted" furniture, but I don't know why. I guess handwritten letters are a slowly dying art, so it is comforting to see script that looks like it has been written with a fountain pen on furniture if no where else outside of an archive. I think this style is best in small doses.

Depends on what it says and the penmanship. Also the materials. Definitely one of those fine line things. If it's a beautiful poem written as a graphic script on a chair, it's a detail. If you have bought all your living room furniture in the same upholstery, I think it's a bit much. I also didn't like the chalkboard scribbling in a way-back post, it was a detail bit of wall near the ceiling all the way around the room, and then sealed. That's like, why not just write on your wall with a permanent pen if you're going to do that. I doubt anyone is going to read that rug in the first picture, maybe they will get something out of it, but in an all-white room with a white rug with black graphic of some sort, why not some kind of literature? Maybe it has the Unabomber's manifesto, then it's not so romantic. If you're still infatuated with Keep Calm & Carry On, they posted the rug here a few weeks ago, and you could probably arrange an iron-on for your sofa back, but then I think that's just horrible.

A verse or quote = nice (with conditions)
Mandates, affirmations, and instructions = not nice
delicate handwritten-like typography = romantic love letter
legible and distinctive typography = not my style, maybe yours.

I think I would like this concept better if the script was tiny enough to be mistaken as a pattern. I think that would make for more polished-looking upholstery or wallpaper.

Though my word-loving heart skips a beat when I see gorgeous penmanship, it's not something I could have in my own home. I once worked in an office underneath a painting that incorporated layers of scrolly handwriting. I spent so much time trying to decode it that I think my productivity suffered...

I love it. Typeface or handwriting, the written word is fascinating, in many different patterns.

THE RUG! We need it!

I love this! I'm a huge fan of text and script as art, lettering as a part of design. These pieces are so unique! And the veggie-sack pillows... awesome!

That sofa looks fantastic. Anybody know if that fabric is in production?

Actually, not just the sofa: I love all of them.
