Big news — furniture retailer Room & Board has purchased the vacant warehouse at 14th and T Streets (1840 14th Street NW). Room & Board won't open a store in the space until early spring of 2010, but DC blogs are all excited about the news. The former auto warehouse is an interesting addition to the Room & Board family since their Minnesota headquarters is in an old car dealership! The 31,600 square foot space has been empty for the last four years and though there were lots of proposed plans for the building, nothing was confirmed until the Room & Board announcement. Hooray! I understand the concerns of independent furniture businesses, but upper 14th street still has a ways to go and could use an anchor. Plus I'm an R&B fan.

i just visited the R&B in san francisco for the first time after being really reluctant and i was surprisingly impressed. its huge, so you really get to see alot of different items and the fabric center (one on each floor!) was amazing.

Yay! Something besides more condos... I'm happy to invite R&B to DC. Welcome!

I got an email from R&B about this last Thursday and am sooo happy. I love their furniture and there really isn't anything else like it in the DC area. I know someone who works for C&B and he said they don't worry about any of the other big stores (PB, Ethan Allen, etc) EXCEPT R&B.

Im gonna wet myself---yeah!!!!! Love this store but be careful about some things. For example, I am a purist and like to buy licensed produced furniture like Eames from Herman Miller and Saarinen from Knoll. The latter is sold at R B and IS NOT produced by Knoll.
Otherwise GREAT furniture. I like that they mix old and new designers

This is GREAT news, I can't wait: DC is finally getting somewhat of a broader design base and right in my neighborhood!
