Outdoor month has arrived...and so have the mosquitoes. Given the swamp status of our city and the absurd amount of rain we've had this season, we capital city dwellers are plagued by the blood-sucking pests. Thankfully, there are chic alternatives to a summer spent indoors and warm evenings drenched in bug spray...

Our favorite is the rise of the Georgia-born Mosquito Curtains, a customizable option for those opposed to the look and expense of screened porches. We've seen quite a few DC apartment balconies and historic porches adorned in them this spring.
Basically, Mosquito Curtains are exactly what they sound like — panels of mosquito netting mounted either on tracks or a velcro system that can be closed at night to block intrusive pests or opened during the day for the elegant look of outdoor curtains.
Besides the draw of having a flexible alternative to standard screened porches, mosquito curtains are typically 80% less than the cost of their permanent counterparts and generally last almost twice as long with proper care. You can chose wither black, white, or ivory curtains.

I saw these advertised all weekend on TV - they seem much less expensive and more effective:

These seem like a good idea, but does anyone know if they work?
Also, I never thought of DC as being a haven for mosquitoes! I thought we had a lock on that claim here in Wisconsin, where the mosquito is sometimes not-so-fondly known as the "state bird."

I saw these mounted in a porch in Domino once, something I saved because it was gorgeous. If only I had a porch--we're getting eaten alive on our patio.

Oh to have a patio like the first, or a balcony like the third. And sally305, I live in Alexandria, about 15 minutes from D.C., and I wouldn't say it's buggy, but it is built on swamp land, so it may be buggy! I think those closer to bodies of water are going to have the issues, not so much downtown residents.

although beautiful, I have serious doubts as to well those curtains would actually work to keep out mosquitoes. They might deter moths and other bugs drawn to the light, but if mosquitoes are a serious problem where you live, and you plan to spend any amount of time on your porch I'd say save your pennies and buy real mosquito screens.

Are any of those photos actually from the DC area? The post mentions seeing the curtains on DC apartments- I'd love to see how that works.

Great idea! We have quite a few mosquitos in our yard and something like this might be what we're looking for. I like that they can be open or closed and probably taken down when it's not mosquito season. I wouldn't think it would be as bug-proof as the screened in gazebo we have at our cottage that also has screen under the floor boards, but for the ease of use I think it's a good trade off.

The problem in DC (or at least in my 'hood, Mount Pleasant) is with Asian Tiger Mosquitos, which are evil evil evil because they bite all day, not just in the evening. So that makes me dubious about how well these curtains would work--you'd basically have to keep them drawn all the time.

My mosquito curtains seem to trap the misquitos inside instead of keeping them out!

I mainly get bitten (black flies, this year) when gardening --so no help here.

Since I live in the mosquito breed hole of the USA....I sure would like to use this idea on my covered patio. It would be helpful....plus look all cool.

I have had the Mosquito Curtains bookmarked for ages as I thought it could work really well on the deck at the back of our rowhouse. We would have to build some frame above the deck to attach them and I would love to see any photos from folks who have done this or something similar in DC.

The mosquito curtains in the backyard blend so well. It took me a minute to even notice them!

DC is full of mosquitoes. Be aware, too, the vectors for Lyme disease are not fully known. That is, while ticks to carry the illness, so do flies. These curtains are beautiful and a great idea--much better than toxic chemicals.
