Living in The Watergate: Balconies with Potomac River Views

With its scandalous history, cool curvy design, and prime Potomac River location, The Watergate is a fascinating DC landmark. Part of The Watergate has been converted into coveted condos — we rounded up a few images of the outdoor spaces so you can share our Watergate-envy...

The penthouse condo shown in the first photo was reconfigured so that every room now has a view of the Potomac River. You can read more about the penthouse condo in Home & Design's article "Potomac Perch; A Watergate penthouse is reconfigured so that every room offers a river view." Also see our previous post on DC interior designer Stan Kelly's Watergate condo.

The terrace is lovely -
- but the apartment and it's furnishings are ghastly.

I looked at an apt there when house hunting in DC with an ex -- mostly out of curiosity -- the interior halls were ghastly with pseudo-colonial decor (so damned ubiquitous in the DC area . . . ) -- and very long, curving halls, more like a yutzy hotel. The unit was a duplex with a terrace off the upper room -- but the circular stair to the room took up half the floor space. It's a very badly designed building.

My first reaction was expensive hotel lobby. Impersonal, yet trying hard to justify the outragious price that they charge, by selling a fantasy.
A sort of "Versailles de la Schmatte"

The Watergate looks like a third world monstrosity.

One of these mornings that guy's dog is going to fly right through that railing.

Two excellent examples that having money does not result in having good taste...so unfortunate

Many of the buildings hallways have been redecorated with more modern furnishings (Watergate East, anyway -- don't know about South or West). Everything does curve so it made re-doing our kitchen a challenge! (I think our remodel is a bit more down-to-earth than this, although I doubt we'd ever get into home & garden)

Yeah, just to escape that tacky decor!

I thought the Watergate was a co-op... maybe just part of it?

That interior is horrible. Whoever said "trying too hard", you were right.
