My Great Outdoors: Peacock Feathers' Patio

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Peacock Feathers
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Type of space: Patio
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: Our small city patio had the potential to be a depressing space, but we turned it into a cheerful entertaining area with color and a touch of whimsy. We use the patio every day for grilling and outdoor dining, and our cats enjoy sunbathing on lazy afternoons. We've also turned it into an urban vegetable garden with the addition of the tiered veggie planter. Hopefully, home-grown tomatoes and spicy peppers will be on cookout menu later this summer!

How did you create it? Kevin and I started out by painting our once drab fence a bright, sun-reflecting white. The ladder was a junk yard find,... too rickety to actually climb, but perfect to hold little flower pots. We simply gave it a quick coat of aqua paint, done imperfectly so it created a weathered look. The tiered veggie planter was our big project. Kevin used the existing wood container on the bottom and built off of it to create three levels, each of which is supported by shelf brackets. The levels are of varying depths to accommodate tomatoes, salad greens, and climbing beans. Finally, the space is accented with a variety of pots and baskets and quirky accessories, including our funny, vintage playground dolphin.

I like what you've done with the ladder.

Excellent combination of aesthetic and practical plantings. Wish there was a wide shot to see the whole space.
