Since 1981, Washingtonians looking to restore old rowhouses or pre-war apartments have turned to The Brass Knob for vintage doorknobs, switchplates, and other pieces of architectural salvage to make their homes complete. Some choose to buy rather than deal with the hassle of restoring their existing fixtures, but many are trying to replace elements removed by previous owners during remodeling projects...

We love to browse at The Brass Knob, and find the stacks of vintage fixtures rather soothing. The love of all things mid-century and modern hurt business in the past few years, but the store recently established an online presence to market their goods to a wider audience- apparently customers in NY are snapping up light fixtures and decorative metalwork.

I recently had our 120 year old door hardware cleaned and serviced at our local restoration hardware - H. Rault in New Orleans. I had been tempted to buy new to us antique stuff since ours was layered with old paint and rust, but for $10 (!!) they polished up everything and even made our mortise lock operational again!
