We've long loved the idea of living in The Watergate and envied the Potomac River views. This week The Washington Post shares the lovely redecorated 2-bedroom, 2-level Watergate condo of Myrna and Arthur "Chip" Fawcett. Designer Lori Graham changed the 1960's decor to a more updated look.

The Fawcetts hired Lori Graham for a budget-friendly makeover that kept many of their existing pieces. Before the redecoration, the condo had padded silk walls and unattractive radiators. Lori Graham turned the ugly radiators into cozy reading nooks with ventilated radiator covers and seat cushions. She also used paint to lighten up the space.

i get a kick out of the line "a budget friendly make-over that kept many of the existing pieces." shouldn't they all be like that? unless you're a millionaire it seems wasteful and stupid to get rid of everything and start from scratch. i love the things i have chosen to keep over the years and woe to the decorator who'd try to get rid of them. not to mention the ideology over-consumption that doesn't seem to be working on a global scale.
i always wonder what those people who redecorate completely tell their friends when they ask "where'd you get this picture?" or "that's a nice lamp, is it an antique from your family?" i'd be embarrassed to admit that every single thing in my home was bought by a stranger to make it look like i had a personality.
just my little morning rant.

The Watergate is a tough building, architecturally. I think this was one of the best renovations I've seen, given the low ceilings and other issues. The designer did a fabulous job with the great room, by turning it into individual spaces while keeping access to the windows.
Chick brings up a great point, which I wish a designer or AT would address. I am told that one hires a designer for their aesthetic, so I guess that means I can never bring in professional help? How do you find a designer who can bring out the best of your taste, while still being able to provide their expertise?

I thought it was interesting that she had a bunch of items replated nickel to update them. Does anyone have experience with that? Is it expensive?

What a spectacular view! Nothing more calming than water, that's why I live at the beach.
