Over-The-Top Color in the Maryland Mountains
Maryland Life, February 2009

To say that artist couple, Beth Piver and Andy Vick, are comfortable with color would be a gross understatement. Glimpsing into their Cumberland, Maryland loft is like entering into a Dr. Seuss book — two blue furry chairs bearing a remarkable resemblance to Thing 1 & Thing 2, a chandelier made out of Barbie dolls, the dining room table made from the hood of a pick-up topped with salvaged glass doors from a department store. And the list goes on...

"Whimsical" is not a strong enough word to describe the multi-color neon walls, the stream of striped-socked mannequin legs lining the window sills, and the lavender shag stair runner framing the balcony floor. It seems fitting that their outrageously vibrant loft be located in the former home of the International Order of Odd Fellows. Many will certainly see their home as "odd," which the couple fully expects — describing their own style as "early modern freak."

One of the most incredible aspects of their decor feat is its sheer expanse — 6,000(!) sq.ft. It seems that every corner, inch of wall space, and door frame bears Beth's bold creativity. Impressive by anyone's standards.

Holy crap, I grew up in Cumberland. I was pretty sure that there was *nothing* there.

I appreciate kooky, but that's a little over the top for me.

I can't decide what is more traumatizing: the plush kitchen lights, the row of balck and yellow stripped boots, or the purple-pink moomoo border in the second to last picture.

But: if it works for some people, and they are comfortable with that style then be it!

I don't want to live there, but I love it. Very impressive to make something with such a carnival-crazy out-of-control sensibility still feel completely in control and safe and comfortable. It doesn't look like a hodgepodge. It really holds together for me.

I think this is awesome. It's like living in PeeWee's Playhouse, all Gary Panter-ed up.

Seeing images of this space reminds me of how much I miss Nest.

Looks like Pee Wee's Playhouse! Loads of fun, but I don't think I would want to live in it all the time.

I'd have loved living there whan I was their age -- too old now! (Mentally) Need more serenity. But it's still way cool!

I grew up in Cumberland. I had heard that the area had changed, but never in my wildest imagination would I have thought it had changed this much. Maybe its time to take a trip back.

wvlinz, this loft was just featured in American Style magazine. I just received my copy yesterday, the April issue arriving in February? Anyway, there are many more pictures of this loft and a few other really outstanding artist occupied homes. http://www.americanstyle.com/ME2/Default.asp
