The White House in Atlanta
The New York Times 1.8.09

1-white-house-atl.jpg

How surreal! With all of our coverage of The White House decor — from new White House china patterns, and even White HouseChristmas Decorations — we find (via The New York Times) a 16,500-square-foot replica of The White House in suburban Atlanta...

Fred Milani, an Atlanta-area McMansion developer built the replica for his own use. Now, he must sell the replica of the presidential mansion to avoid foreclosure in the teeming Atlanta housing market. Currently on the market for $9.88 million, the home features its own Oval Offcie, Lincoln Bedroom and (a bit surprisingly) lots of religious iconography.

See the story, Hard Times Find Replica of White House for Sale and the slideshow at The New York Times. For additional pictures, see Luxist.

Does it come with the surface-to-air missiles already mounted on the roof - you know, like the real thing?

Someone had more money than taste - or good sense.

I actually live right down the road from this house. They have a bed of flowers in the very front of the yard that spells out something like "Jesus Loves You" or "God Bless America." Can't remember exactly, but super tacky.

This is so tacky it comes back round again to almost OK. Almost. The cheap Last Supper tapestry is unforgivable in any context, but that's easily remedied. And at least the house is white. I'd bet good money that the next tacky owner paints it pancake batter yellow.

it's a funny story, but at it's heart it's just a big house.
cover it in ivy, get rid of the presidential and religious symbolisms and it might even have a shot of looking normal.

the article mentions twice someone in dubai looking into the house. why would someone in dubai want to buy a 10m house in atlanta? buying cnn, the hawks, braves, falcons i can believe...

I struggled with whether this was unbelievably cool or unbelievably tacky... for about five seconds... and came down on the side of unbelievably cool. Definitely a case of being so bad that it's actually good.

If you lived there, you could go in two directions. One, go crazy with the replica furnishings and revel in the unironic patriotism of it all. Or two, treat it objectively as a grand neo-classical mansion with beautiful proportions and tweak the interior and grounds to demonstrate a more subdued sensibility.

Personally I think it's fantastic that an immigrant loves his adopted country so much.

Utterly dreadful.

If I had the money to replicate a dream house, it would be a Neutra, a Lautner.....something.....but this is such a crass cliche. Like an imitation Gucci bag bought on a Hong Kong side street.

There's another White House look-alike in Newport, Rhode Island, but it's been turned into condos.

They BURNT Atlanta down to the ground during the Civil War, now we have a reason to DO IT a second time!!!

This white elephant is proof positive any deranged idiot could - and in Atlanta apparently did - get rich during the phony money boom.

Before going bust and leaving the taxpayers with a multi-trillion dollar mess to clean up . . .

There's also a scaled down replica White House in San Antonio. History lovers, I guess!

Vulgar and hideous. Only in America.

If he really wants to sell it, he should bite the bullet and get rid of the hideously tacky religious stuff. If ordinary people can take down their precious kid photos to sell their three bedroom, he can chop off that grade-school-level bushes design.

The sculptures of Jesus and such can stay, since they're not unbelievably juvenile and ugly. But yeesh, guy, have some taste.

It is a really beautiful house, though. If it were mine I would probably get rid of most of the more superficial Hey Hey I'm the Whitehouse stuff. The oval office and the beautiful desk can stay, but I'd take down the Presidential Seal and throw out the towels. And definitely paint over that Lincoln.

There's another copy in Great Falls, VA and a Monticello-esque house in Oakton/Vienna. Whenever we go home (NoVA), my siblings and I have a contest to see the latest worst/best McMansion monstrosity. Maybe it's a politico thing.

It would take a hell of alot paint and reworking, but it could be made into a nice place. The rear of the house and pool is beautiful.

Never has a foreclosure been more deserving. Horrid inside and out. I guess Jesus didn't like his style either.

Just looking at this house made my soul die a little, that is simply tacky. I think if you are going to build a house you should make it your own original.
