apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Avery's World Market
Room for Color - South #4

thumbs up

Name: Avery
Location: Washington, D.C.
Type of Home: 2 bedroom condo

Color Inspiration: For work and pleasure, I do quite a bit of traveling around the world, particularly in developing countries, and have brought back pieces with amazing colors and patterns. I wanted a room that could match the vibrancy of my souvenirs and bring out the rich colors in the exposed brick and hardwood floor in my main living area.

Give Avery a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

World Market

Color Inspiration continued: I narrowed in on the piece with the most colors - a quilted wall hanging I brought back from Thailand - and tried to find a color that worked well with that piece as well as complemented the brick and wood features in this room.

Colors Used: Benjamin Moore Teal Ocean #2049-30
Benjamin Moore Dusty Road #1017

Color Tip: Trust your instincts! Find a piece of artwork you really love and gravitate towards - whether it is a wall hanging or sculpture or artwork - and find colors that will help make that piece pop. But also try to choose a color that complements the natural features in your room - like brick and wood - to create a unified look and feel.

The only thing my eyes can focus on is that blue wall. As pretty as that color is, I don't think it belongs in a room like this. It also takes away from every other element in the photographs that shouldn't be overlooked. Good color, though!

This looks like a real-life sitcom apartment (I mean that in a good way!)

The blue ties everything together beautifully. Any chance of pulling a bit of it onto the floor somehow?

Very vibrant color that could have gone all wrong, but was pulled off so well. This color goes so well with the brick and the wood. It's true that this does look like a sitcom apt., meaning it would look great on TV!

Think those special items would really stand out on neutral wall. Too much with the brick and light floors.

I like it the way it is but another option would be to leave the cabinet wall the dark aqua and paint the other walls a lighter aqua or a different color. Love the exposed brick!

LOVE the colors and wonderful, worldly feel of the place! This is my same design aesthetic. Traveling brings the best decor!

I do like the color of the wall, but like others all I can focus on is the blue because it ends so abruptly. I think a great way to cure that would be to add accents that have the blue color to the brick wall so that the eye travels around the room and it doesn't look like two photos of two different rooms side by side. Great job and great space!
