Elizabeth's Apple of Her Eye
Room for Color - South #6

thumbs up

Name: Elizabeth
Location: North Charleston, South Carolina
Type of Home: single family home

Color Inspiration: One day, I was shopping and fell in love with a couch. I'd visit it at the store, sit on it, think about it, dream about it. So, I plunked down the money and bought it. I love it. From there, I found the curtains at ikea to tie in the new green couch with my existing red furniture. With the green and red, I felt the need for a calming, non-bright color to bring it all together and decided to paint the walls the aptly named 'tranquil pond.'

Give Elizabeth a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

Apples & Sky

Colors Used: The walls are 'Tranquil Pond' by The Freshaire Choice. Early on, I decided to paint my home using only non-VOC paint - they have some great colors.

Color Tip: Find something you love, and wrap the room around it. But, stick to what's you. If tans and whites make you happy - go for it. To me, the goal is - when you open the door and step into your home at the end of the day, you should think "ah, home, love this place."

I LOVE this. Love love love it! Did I mention I love it? It makes me happy just looking at it, a look I want for my own home. Certainly these aren't colors I'd use in my bedroom, but they're perfect for a living room. I can't imagine guests could feel humdrum in that room, and that's exactly how living rooms should function! It's bright and playful without being too overwhelming or looking like a circus sideshow. Awesome job!

This is awesome. I love the light blue walls with all the bright blue and red - and the glimpse of the dining with that great light is "right on".

it's a little too matchy-matchy. i like the dining room better, though it too suffers from the matchy-matchy a bit!

I'm personally not a fan of red upholstery, but other than the red furniture I love that color green against those walls.

I don't mind matchy-matchy. The eye likes symmetry and it all fits in. Who cares if it is show-roomy. It's clean, neat, and makes the owner happy--which is the biggest testament to a successful room.

very matchy-matchy and the art is undersized for the space. Looks like a good start to a room but needs more subtle colours and the colours to be more intergrated into the whole room. I would slipcover or redo the chair in a pattern that has all three colours and a base of white.

This is great, you've really managed to keep a light and airy feel while packing the place with colour.

Oh, those curtains are SO cute!

Theo, if the changes you suggested were made to this room, it would lose all its bold charm and be something completely different!

I'm not crazy about that wall color with the red, but I like it with the green. I think one reason the room feels too matchy-matchy is that the pillows on each couch are of the same fabric. More texture and pattern is needed to break up the big blocks of color in the room. Maybe incorporate a hint of the wall color onto those big surfaces elsewhere for balance. This could be remedied with unmatching pillows and maybe a throw to tone down the red couch. Whatever you do, avoid using the same fabric as the curtains for the pillows. Love the curtains, but you wouldn't want to over coordinate.

This living room feels so young, fun and inviting. It's not the predictable, stuffy look people all to often pick out at the nearest Rooms To Go. Definitely thumbs up!

I usually don't like the COLOR submits.

This one has a certain amount of restraint that appeals to me, a design sense. It gives the eye places to rest, and is not overcrowded or chaotic.

Bravo!

So cheerful! I wonder how the feel would change with a second lime green sofa, and just have the red easy chair accent. Still, this is such a nice, fun space!

Those curtains are THE BOMB! I love the way they tie the red and green from the living room in with the blue in the dining room. What a great find/creation/whatever. I love it!

I just have to express this, or it'll bug me - you should consider shifting the coffee table so the long side faces the green couch, it w3ould give a better sense of balance and a better anchor to the big furniture pieces.

Matchy matchy or not, one must admit this room is definately colorful. It's not my personal taste, but I like how bold it is. This is a great, young, happy room. Wonderful for a family with young kids.

Thanks for sharing!

I like this actually, Its not something I would usually favor.

One thing- I dont understand how you could possibly sit on the couches? The coffee table is sooo close!

I have to say that I love the style of the living/dining room....cute and cheery! Although I am partial to North Charleston since I live there I still think this room should be the winner! BTW-does the owner of this place live in Park Circle by chance?

I love how you used the color in here! I've always found it hard to picture a room with white walls as colorful but you've forever shattered that for me. In face I think the lack of wall-color makes everything pop perfectly! Great job!

bah. My laptop was at a weird angle, just noticed the light blue/gray color on the walls. Anywho, it still has the same effect :)
