Lital's Earth Toned Family Room
Room for Color - International #15

thumbs up

Name: Lital
Location: Ra'anana, Israel
Type of Home: single family home

Color Inspiration: Our family room was very small so we decided to use bright colors in order to make it look bigger. Also, by using different tones and shades of "earth colors", we managed to create a calmer, more relaxing environment.

Give Lital a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!
Thumbs Up Voting is only activated for 48 Hours — so don't delay!

Earth Colors

Colors Used: The wall color is light gray; the sofa is gray mixed with dark blue; The table and chairs are made of straw, and the TV unit is made of MDF and painted with dark Venga wood color.

Color Tip: It's all about matching.

Great job on mixing up the texture. Texture add so much in a monochromatic room.

Nor do I see any bright colors; rather, I see a good use of neutrals in different textures, along with well-placed art and decorative items, that make the room quite attractive and inviting.

I like the use of color and texture also. I might experiment with furniture placement, though.

I feel hypocritical since I defended slate gray as a color in the comments of an earlier entry, but this entry DOES seem antithetical to the spirit of a color-competition, I must say.

If we're to deem this seemingly neutral room "colorful", what would qualify as a colorless room-- one that was strictly black and white?

That said, it's a lovely relaxing room that I wouldn't change (I love neutrals!). I especially dig that woven artwork over the sofa.

This a total winner of a NEUTRALS contest. can't blame the folks for entering it, it's the folks running the contest that allowed it.

As a showcase of the depth and richness of an all neutral palette, it works wonderful. As an entry in a colour contest, as the kids say: fail.

Col hacavod lach Lital! Cheder yafefiyah!

Personally, I think a room in this contest should not have to be bright and can certainly be neutral. Clever use of color doesn't mean that you use neon or saturated tones (necessarily) but that you combine colors in a way that builds a mood, pleases the eye, harmonizes (or clashes wonderfully)... etc. I would love to see a mustard shade on the wall in this room, but I really like the way these natural shades work together and feel vibrant despite the fact that they aren't what we think of when we think "color."

It's funny, btw... most Israeli apts seem to have white walls. We don't have the Norwegian lack-of-sun excuse!! Why is that?

Agreeing w/TheoJ and shirleytemple. Looking at this space, I can say, "calm," "serene," "understated," but NOT "colorful." Not by a longshot.

But I DO love that coffee table!

An absolutely beautiful and inviting living room. Well laid out, peaceful, comfy..all those adjectives...however, no colour, sorry, I'm flabbergasted with the number of votes this received. I'm guessing that ALL photos are submitted to the contest by AT, no matter how void of colour the room is and it is up to the viewers to make the choice. That said, is everyone colourblind?? Again though, this is a well executed room and I congratulate the owner(s) for their decor talents.

A beautiful room, however, I'm getting very annoyed by the amount of rooms on here that shouldn't be in a 'colour' contest.

I suppose when I think of a color contest I want to see bold, bright, colors. Reds, blues, yellows, oranges, etc.

Neutrals are great, but perhaps AT should rethink this contest. It appears that it's simply a 'best room' contest opposed to a color contest.

If this had been any color family but tan/brown, no one would be complaining. Tan is the stepchild of the AT family.

Since we aren't looking at a black and white photo, then it must count as COLOR-- and it achieves what it set out to do: make the space feel larger, open, and calming. Well done!

If the brightness of color is the criteria in this contest, I suppose all the winners will have to use only blinding day-glo colors typically found in highlighting pens. I thought we were looking for color used WELL.

So, exactly how eye-popping does it have to be in order to qualify as "color"? Is there no "color" in a pale winter landscape or a cloudy sky? Are subtlety, elegance, and restraint disqualifying factors here?

I do love this but I could go for a little surprising splash somewhere, even if just a bouquet of dark red flowers. Something to give the room more of a focal point. It's extremely tasteful, however, and I also love the coffee hassock/table and the pictures. Well-done...

Yeah, teapotrose, that's exactly what I'm missing in this room : "a little surprising splash". Beautiful and inviting room but somehow it does look a bit staged, not lived in... I saw myself entering it with a colourful plaid, my books, candles and a cup of tee in my hands.
