Nicole's 'East Coast' Studio
Room for Color - South #5

thumbs up

Name: Nicole
Location: Washington, DC
Type of Home: studio

Color Inspiration: I just moved into this apartment a few months ago, and literally lost sleep over what color to paint the walls. I knew I wanted a shade of blue; my childhood bedroom was painted in three different shades of tropical blue because I loved them all and couldn't pick just one. It is simply a color I can't live without. However, for my current studio, I wanted something serene yet sophisticated. After agonizing over a fan deck for weeks, I found the perfect shade of deep grayish blue. The color reminds me of cold ocean water, which is quite fitting seeing as much of my life and decor is inspired by water.

Give Nicole a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

East Coast

Colors Used: Benjamin Moore Evening Dove

Color Tip: Keep it classy. This doesn't necessarily mean using color conservatively- it means using it tastefully. Traditional colors can be fresh, and bold colors can be elegant. Juxtaposition is always sexy. But ultimately, using color is about creating a space that is comfortable, inspiring, and beautiful.

It's beautiful, serene, and uncluttered. I love your bed linens, and having the netting up helps make it seem like your bed is its own separate space. The ocean blue is gorgeous.

You did a nice job. The paint color looks great and the yellows, cream all play nicely with this dark grey blue. The white sheers add a nice soft touch.

Love it! Our front room is the same color scheme, the dark blue actually expanded the feel of the room, it's perfect in your studio. Great job!

GORGEOUS! This is one of my favorites. So tranquil. I'd love to escape here and that is what a place should be. :) Very nice color balance, great shade of blue...the blue and yellow really compliment each other and the white creates such a fresh feeling. So fresh!

That room's got class out the... I was reading a book at Half Price Book Stores... and I picked up one called "Timeless Design"... which for the most part was... however NOTHING dates rooms more than the electronics in'em... it was a 1990s book and even tho they used classic contemporary jewels like the Barcelona chair, and Eames stuff... the clunky TVs and bunny ears really didn't work too well with the whole "timeless" aesthetic.

Your apartment looks spectacular! You have such a talent for balancing color, texture, natural lighting, etc. into a unique and visually pleasing space. It looks like a "mansion" packed into a studio!!! Absolutely my favorite entry!!!

Nicole - Is this the Statesman?!?? My roommate used to live there and I have to say, you've done a great job of making a cookie-cutter studio look awesome.

Thank you to everyone who posted for the kind comments!

LSUgrad03 & azaleasmoke: The linens are by Dwell Studio, but I got them about two years ago. Unfortunately, they no longer make this pattern (if they did I would buy a spare set!) Even at the time I got them they were impossible to find... I had to call design stores around the country and have them shipped to me! I can't speak for the Dwell line at Target because I haven't felt/used them, but the linens from Dwell Studio are wonderful. They keep their color well and the sheets are incredibly soft- I highly recommend them!

kathleen3641- yes, this is the Statesman- great eye!

There is color and then there is color, I don't see the vibrancy of colour in here, it's very subdued.

Love the wall color. Very similar to Behr's Magnet Dapple which I became absolutely obsessed with in my home.

I was surprised (and incredibly pleased) to see that you kept the original finish on the old cream and white "French Provincial" desk! I have seen similar pieces featured in way too many "before and after" projects, usually involving glossy teal paint and, I don't know, wallpaper or decals or something all over it. It is refreshing to see that you have incorporated the style as-is into a very un-kitschy (and beautiful) room. Very well done!
