Now that it's finally starting to feel like summer in DC, we've been indulging in one of our favorite lazy night activities: outdoor fires. For those of you lucky enough to have a backyard or patio to call your own, fire pits are an easy way to transform your outdoor space into a relaxing destination. So can you just build one yourself, or do you have to (legally) use a sort of contraption like these? I imagine it's state-to-state, but just wondering.

quiltmaster, you can do indoor firepits in many regions if you have 1) custom venting or 2) you use an ethanol burner which you can burn indoors. see http://www.solusdecor.com/hemi26.html
