Roundup: Products for your Landing Strip

Yesterday as part of this week's Spring Cure, Laure and Abby gave you wonderful ideas for creating a functional and welcoming landing strip — the place where you unload when you walk in the door. Mail, keys, cellphones often get lost in a jumble as you shift gears after a busy day away. Here are a few of our favorite products for keeping the landing strip organized and welcoming...

Junk mail is probably the number one clutter culprit in our home. Sorting through it always seems to be the task that we put off for later. However, we've found that keeping a trashcan by the front door and/or hall table prevents clutter accumulation before it begins. Toss junk mail in a paper only wastebasket as you walk in and combine it with your recycling later. Here are a few stylish entry-worthy options.
The Tubelor Trashcan from Molla Space comes in 6 colors. The tube on top masks eye sore trash bags underneath.

We also like Target's ceramic Reaction Oasis Paper Waste Box which looks more like a piece of decor than a trash receptacle.

These beautiful baskets from Uncommon Goods made from recycled rags are our top pick for price and graphic points.

Another must for an orderly entryway is a good tray or bin for pocket change and other small items that easily get lost in the mix. We like smaller trays that don't let us throw in too much, otherwise too many things begin to accumulate in it.

We love John Derian's tray designs, and were especially thrilled when he joined Target's Design for All movement. We love this small, shallow tray that's just big enough for pocket contents and keys. Here's one of our favorites.

Another favorite is Etsy seller, dcmetaldesign's gorgeous ginkgo leaf tray

If you're looking for a more comprehensive organizing system for your console table, we love CB2's Format desk accessories. They're clear so they won't let you get away with being too messy or accumulating too much clutter on the entry table.

The entry table itself also has a big impact on the landing strip. Most of our entries won't accommodate huge entry tables. DWR's Rubik Console Table is an investment, but it's narrow profile will ensure it will fit in most entries for years to come. We like that it doesn't have drawers because too may hiding places for junk get us in trouble, and we also like that it's on sale!

But for those who prefer a little more storage or a smaller price tag, The Company Store's Bristol Console which comes in 5 colors is another great pick.

I'm looking for a console table with a similar look to the DWR one but with a smaller footprint (10 inches deep X 30 inches long). Any suggestions? Thanks!

All great tips! And I love the idea of having a clock hanging over the landing strip. I hadn't thought of that. I might add one. Currently, we have a mirror hanging over ours. It's so nice to be able to look into it on our way out the door, to make sure we don't have any lettuce stuck between our teeth, or to make sure our hair isn't sticking up, etc. Sounds vain, but we use our landing strip's mirror every day before we go outside to face the world.

I have the Room & Board slim console table (http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=19700) for my narrow hallway (though I have the one that's only 7" deep). It's significantly less expensive than the DWR version and it's served me well for years.

I think another piece that's great for small space landing strips is the Ikea shoe cabinet. We've had the low and wide sandes cabinet in our hall closet for a while (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90111895) and it's great not only b/c it tucks the shoes away, but also because you can put a tray for mail, keys, etc on top of it.

there's no letter J on that tray

kira lee - I think it's because there's no J or W in classical Latin (the W is also missing)

thanks Aaron, Wigorama and deneph. I had been contemplating the Room and Board "slim collection" and I think it might be a winner.

The first photo is from the October 2007 issue of Living, etc. No idea who makes the messenger bag (want it, love it, need it) but it should be easy enough to track down the magazine or make the bag yourself.

"Junk mail is probably the number one clutter culprit in our home."

Can't you get a 'no junk mail' sticker for your door?
