Actually, that's just a telephone table. A gossip bench would have another seat facing the other way so that the two seated people can speak with their heads close together.

My grandparents called it the phone table. When houses had only one phone they were often in the hallway and were sized to fit between doorways. The phone was on the top shelf and the phone book down below.
