Behind this nondescript storefront on Connecticut Avenue lies one of Cleveland Park's best resources - an old fashioned sewing machine and vacuum repair shop. Sure, you can buy the latest and greatest appliances there as well, but it is the dedication to repairing and maintaining older machines that makes this store a treasure...
The store is worth a trip just to take a look at the vintage models on display (and often for sale). The back area is always stuffed with equipment in for an overhaul or a specific fix, and the laid back attitude is welcoming to new customers new and old.
The last time we dropped off a sewing machine, it was only $89.95 to have it cleaned and tuned (including a much needed repair to the crucial zipper foot). We went on vacation and forgot to return to pick it up for a couple of months; when we finally dropped by, the manager laughed and said that the store doesn't start to worry until the machine has been there for a year or so! If you have an older vacuum or sewing machine you want to keep in working order, we happily recommend Brothers Sew & Vac.

anyone know of a good mom-and-pop like this in Brooklyn (Fort Greene/downtown area)? It's getting increasingly difficult to find people that know how to work on sewing machines and vacuums and they continue to be produced in such a disposable fashion.

This type of business is increasingly rare, but we need more! The ultimate green is fixing instead of replacing.
Yes, I realize there are times something must be replaced. But oftentimes, a fix is just as good -- but nowadays, hard to find.

I work at a college in upper Manhattan, and some of faculty recommended this place to me; they've been maintaining my sewing machines for years (the last time I had an overhaul it was $75, but that was two years ago.)
They're at Broadway and 108th St., right near the #1 train.

I never would have thought you could still get a vacuum repaired in the city- thanks for posting about this place!

Thanks for posting this! Does anyone know if they work on vintage Singer sewing machines? I couldn't tell much about the repair side when I looked at the website.

I've been taking my Miele vacuum cleaner to Crown for years for regular maintenance. They also do major repairs and the prices are fair. Yes, they're excellent.

Rosie,
They've worked on White and Kenmore machines for my family, and I'm certain I've seen Singers in there as well. Some of the machines I've seen in there have been very vintage indeed- I would give a call or drop in with your machine for assistance.

Another person who needs a sewing machine repair shop in brooklyn... Downtown brooklyn would be better but I'm willing to travel.
I had an older Singer serviced at a shop on 23rd street (wish I could remember the name but its near 7th ave if I remember correctly) and they LOST MY SEWING MACHINE. They gave me a similiar machine all fixed up free of charge but as you can imagine, it was a big annoying. The machine I was given stopped working approximately two weeks after I brought it home.
I really, really need a new shop to try.
