Plano Home Office System
Washington DC

Plano2.jpg

We're on a desk/home office kick this week - probably because we're tired of balancing our laptop on the couch! We love the clean lines of the Plano system from Vastu in DC. Made to order in Brazil, this system can be configured to fit any space...

We love the look of the small unit above, and can imagine it turning an unused nook into a compact office space for someone who only occasionally works from home. Alas, we have no unused nooks in our apartment, so creating a workspace is going to necessitate eliminating something else...

Have any of you used the Plano or a similar Wall mounted office system? If so, did you find it functional? What made you choose wall-mounted over a more traditional setup?

This looks like it would be perfect for my situation:

I just had an Olfa system installed. The neat thing about their systems is that the vertical supports hang from a single horizontal support, rather than bolted to a wall.

Had I known about Plano I would have priced it out (given how luxe it looks, I'd wager it would have been too expensive for me).

I chose Olfa over a conventional desk and shelves and other wall-mounted systems for several reasons.

1. The space is a fairly deep and wide storage closet -- a conventional desk would have been an awkward fit and not used the space as efficiently as possible.
2. I wanted to make streamlined use of both vertical and horizontal space
3. I wanted a cohesive, integrated appearance
4. I wanted the flexibility of adjustable surface heights/configurations
5. Price. I had a mid-rangebudget of $800.
6. Quality. Regular laminated particle board shelving is cheap. the boards warp and the laminate peels.
7. Aesthetic. Olfa looks much better than most DIY systems, like Rubbermaid for example. Not as pretty as Plano, that's for sure!

The results are dramatic and I couldn't be more pleased!

I chose beech shelving and platinum supports. I've also ordered a compliment of the Container Store's "Stockholm" office organization boxes in white and a handful of silver-tone office accessores to finish off the clean look. I've not got a workstation/media closet that I'm not ashamed for anyone to see. :-)
