Shift Media Console/Bookcase from Crate & Barrel
Washington DC

8-21-media-3.jpg

8-21-MediaCnsl-2.jpgThe Shift Media Console/Bookcase from Crate & Barrel can be used as a console, bookcase and room divider. It's a versatile piece because you can place it horizontally or vertically, and stack several pieces on top of one another. More info below the jump...

This is part of the Crate & Barrel's ready-to-assemble line, which means you'll have to build it yourself. Is that a deal-breaker for you? We like both the teak and black melamine color choices.

Each Shift Media Console/Bookcase costs $199 and measures 27.25"Wx15"Dx73.75"H.
How would you use it?

Is it particleboard like most other flatpack furniture?

That'd be a great DIY project!

i don't know what looks better...these or the ones from Ikea that are actually cheaper and bigger. What do you guys think? The wood grain finish on the the top looks sorta cheap to me.

It gives off a cheap Walmart vibe.

it is particleboard and unfortunately has a cheap look to it. however when i put my tv on it and added some odds and ends to the shelves, it's not half bad. my dvd and cable boxes fit nicely in the smaller, open backed shelves and my kitten has adopted one of the larger shelves as his resting spot. to make lemonade of the piece, i've decided that i'll keep it while continuing to search for a nicer piece and can then use this as behind the couch storage for blankets and yoga props. it will look great as a ledge for a small lamp and some framed photos!

Of course it's made of melamine-covered particleboard...
- Did do you honestly expect solid teak from Crate and Barrel for $199?

does this come in white? honestly, i'm thinking of having my dad just build this unit. I can't believe someone wants $199 for this junk. For $157 you can buy a whole wall unit that looks nicer from Ikea.

I recently bought this piece. While it's got a fiberboard core, the laminate on the outside has a very realistic grain texture and it's solidly designed.

April, I bite my thumb at you. Making a connection between something I own and Walmart is grounds for war.

My intent was to mount it to the wall horizontally as a sort of bookshelf / console thing. Due to a few small issues, I didn't end up securing to the wall, but I did attach five large casters to the bottom. It allows me to move it about a bit and gives it a cool industrial feel. I wish I had a picture handy. Grr.

I found a fabulous Crate and Barrel bookcase at my local thrift store similar to the one above, but with sliding doors for a mere $44. Too bad I have nowhere to put it.

I just bought one to help make the introduction of my boyfriend 46-inch television into teeny apartment more bearable... if that's possible.
