Although I would prefer 4 of the same chairs, I don't think the mixed chairs deter from the artistic point of view.

Great use of some awesome modern elements, and without being too "trendy" like I've seen in some entries. I love your patio!

I think the biggest "No No" is a person who finds the need to post rude/critical comments when others bravely show us their homes. Funny that it seems to be the same posters most of the time.

I personally would be bored out of my mind to have in a dinning table 4 or 6 chairs of the same. What I said is that one should not mix, never, metal legs with wooden legs in one setting. The owners might love what they have and good for them. It just irritates my sensibilities and therefore does not get my vote. I was not being rude or anything, I think people are childish when they retrean under the pretense that someone was rude - grow up. If people are this sensitive, they should not post in an open forum and expect only positive input. It is a sign of maturity to accept constructive critisism with grace.

Maybe it was the big "NO-NO" that made you come off like you were scolding a school child rather than being constructive.

very lovely! Though I would have liked to see the panel wall of Nelson clocks that they mentioned as being their favorite element of the home.

Anusha, maybe your sensibilities need to be overhauled and then you can make kind, constructive comments.

After design school and a decade of experience you learn that in the end the clients loves and personality must shine through. Otherwise, you have a staged area for a magazine shoot. Love your space, love your personality.

About the dining chairs, rules were made to be broken! Light sculpture is really great!

Overall, I really like it! I love to see homes on here that are somewhat modern but don't have all white walls and/or white furniture.

But, where is all the stuff for your 4 year old ;)? I have a 4 year old and 1 year old and I'm wondering where all there stuff is?

If you've been around AT for a while, you've seen Joel's name pop up frequently, usually attached to positive, helpful and interesting comments. The man knows design, and I really enjoy seeing the evolution of this home over the past few years. Well done!

I love the light sculpture as well! I would have loved to see the wall of Nelson clocks though. I had plans for something similar, but quickly realized that it would be a costly endeavor. Nelson clocks don't come cheap!

And mix up the materials! Why not? You only live once. I've got a big ass wood dining table with rusty 1950's drafting chairs and I think they look great.

I wish the patio shot were a little higher so we could see that nifty hand made swivel lamp on the side of the house.

I will try to answer some the questions...
First of all, I appreciate the tip from Anusha. I think it's safe to go with similar legs but I like to spice things out once in a while! LOL! I have a serious chair addiction and the dinning room is my favorite place for experimentation. We had a big family gathering at my place during the holidays (seating 12) and I ask the guests to go around the house and pick their favorite/comfortable chair to sit while having dinner. The outcome was awesome: Mom picking up the Bertoia dining chair, some emecos, favorites where the Eames side plastic chair and DCW's. I got "stuck" with the prouve standard chair and my wife with the red DCW. It was a cool mission...
In regards of the light sculpture; is made basically from some "Y" that I got from homedepot and low voltage LED home made bulbs (using regular halogen bulbs and gut them/replacing the inwards with the LED's) The most tediously work came from removing the little barcode stickers from the "Y's"... it's a fun DIY if you get the low wattage bulbs, otherwise you are calling for trouble.
Most of the artwork, we did it ourselves (the big one is actually a wooden door) including the "fake" subway station. It doesn't reflect a real exit. we joke about it. Numbers and letters have a hidden message for us!
Art, if you know about the swivel lamp, you've been paying attention!!!!

Hey, what happened to the nicely crafted DIY door/fence at the top of the stairs?

I love the sconce installation - I remember seeing it elsewhere on AT as a ceiling fixture in a posh resto. It's better on the wall, IMO.

Isabella is 4 y.o. now... she can climb the stairs no problem... We re-used the door to cover up the AC unit outside...
Irvin Harper was the first one to use the lamp concept a while ago.... with black "Y" instead.

what is the floor covering beneath the dining table?

What color is that orange paint? I love it.

The color in the breakfast nook is behr S-G 190. Red Hot... unlike other Behr paints I used in the past, this one was a pain to get even. but after 4 coats it was worth it.
The rug under the dinning table is custom made by an argentinian company. Maria didn't want the "too organic" look of the cowhide but I really like the pattern, so this company created the color combination that I want it (mostly blacks and whites) in the pattern I wanted.
We are really pleased with the rug...

Eh.. I've been following Joel & Maria since they first entered into the Small Cool Contest. While I think they have lots of beautiful elements the whole is a little un-cohesive. It feels very object-focused - and with so many objects with big personalities I think the sense of who the owners are gets lost.

Hi, I bet this home is fun to live in. Please do tell where you got your closet doors from, the sliding door on the wall between the laptop and the bed, and also, the stairwell railings. I'm buying a home and have been looking for the above. You got my votes. Good luck!
