Little Division #37

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Kelly + cat Mio
Location: Washington, DC

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? The bright green kitchen makes me happy — it's the first thing you see when you open the door!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? My limited budget was definitely the biggest obstacle. This is my first apartment after graduating college — I started with very little funds and no furniture. I relied on IKEA (and was surprised and happy with the result!) and I also did some serious foraging in my parents' attic and on Craigslist.

Give Kelly a THUMBS UP if you think this home belongs in the finals!

you lucked out with that great tiled wood flooring! i love it. i'm not so crazy about the rug in the front room though. i love the matching dining and coffee tables!

i like the slate color you chose for your dining area to separate that room.

That walk in closet looks like a dream come true.

Your color palette is fantastic, but I wish there was more personality - art, books, the kitty :)

Looks like you are off to a great start! I love to see the homes of people just starting off (like me). You have a great apartment...nice windows, floors, closets (!!), paint...

Lovely job. Amazing that it's your first place. My first place after school looked no where near this good. You seem to have a real feel for what your aesthetic is. I love the color scheme and the simplicity.

Did you make the art over the sofa? Really cute. I also love the rug in front of the sofa, and how it picks up the colors of the painting. I know the old rule about not matching decor to art, but I never really pay attention that rule.

Great job. Good luck.

Your place looks so comfy and cheerful! Great job! My first place had one $6 chair from a used furniture store and a mattress on the floor - LOL. You've got a great eye for doing a lot with a little!

I like the color scheme, and how simple and uncluttered everything looks, but agree that this feels a little unfinished still.

The living room just needs a few touches. Maybe curtains or another chair. I'd definitely acquire some big green, leafy plants to take advantage of all that light. The bedroom is rather sparse in that picture. It looks like it needs more color--art or curtains or a rug.

The bedroom looks cozy, but maybe needs some pretty curtains. The living room and kitchen look a little sparse, but I love the 'kelly' green walls, and the blue accent in the dining area.
I'm in my first post-collegiate apartment too, wish I had this much light, and this big of a bedroom where I live.

Definitely better than my first place that was in a shabby but liveable little sleeping room (or efficiency as they are sometimes called) in what was essentially a 10.5x22 or so foot room in what was formarly a hotel come apartments, built in the 1910's and converted in the 30's kind of place and the bath was shared by 5 other units similar to mine, each floor was like this. funky yes, but it served me for 6 months. :-)

It's taken me a few years but my place is 10 times better than when I started and you will too.

Some things of note, I'd reslip cover the couch in another color other than white, it blends into the wall, making the room seem a little too white for my taste and the artwork above it isn't bringing in much color and it needs a second comfy chair as well but otherwise, it's a great start.

The dining and kichen areas look good and do agree, the bedroom needs a bit of an oomph, color would do the trick in there. When you are faced with renter white walls, you need to add some color or the place can look a little souless.

again, a very good start and hope you continue to work on this space and would love to see an update if possible.

I love the kitchen wall with the chalk paint. Great for entertaining and for jotting down a quick phone number!
The apartment as a whole is a bit sparse or unfinished to me. But that's just me.
Loving that kitchen wall!

I have to absolutely agree with the comment above. I can only assume that the only thing greater than this Small Cool Place is the person living in it. :)

Ok I have to state this - this is more or less the chair you bought at Ikea -- http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S69805416.

This is almost the same chair at Target -- http://www.target.com/Bentwood-Cushioned-Chair-Natural/dp/B000X0A87C/sr=1-4/qid=1239935196/ref=sr_1_4/180-7497010-2066632?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Abentwood&page=1

Bright and colorful. What a great amount of space for a single in DC.

The biggest change I'd make is the dining room light fixture. Doesn't go with your young, fresh style.
