Sophie Blackall: Missed Connections

We all love reading the random and amazing Craigslist Missed Connections of our city; whether you're doing it for entertainment, or to see if someone may have written something about you. Whenever I read them, I always try to picture the scenario in my head and now someone has helped us out with that.

Sophie Blackall is an illustrator from Brooklyn, New York and runs a blog called Missed Connections. She's uses it as her platform to display her illustrated Missed Connections. She describes her work as "Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I'm trying to pin a few of them down."

Do you read the Missed Connections of your city?

Who doesn't read them? I used to read the personally when they were in paper form and the one to top for me was from a mid-80s Austin Chronicle. The ad read: North on Mopac - you, blonde hair, convertible BMW - me, brown beard white Hugo. Good luck with that one.

I had never read them before just now. They're overwhelmingly dumb or just silly. Probably won't go back.

Sophie Blackall's work is marvelous- I'm a former children's bookseller, and I think I've collected most of the books she's illustrated. The Ivy and Bean series by Annie Barrows is particularly endearing, and Blackall's illustrations are a perfect match- a mix of sweet and devious.

I'm delighted to find that she's a Craig's List fan as well!!

OMG, years ago, I moved to a new city where I didn't know anyone so, to entertain myself, I started submitting "Missed Connections" ads about myself to the local free paper. It was fun for a while, until I got a life!

I love these images.

I never look through them myself, but recently one of my co-workers was looking and found one written about me! I'm a waitress at a local restaurant and it was so amusing to see that someone had remembered me for one reason or another, and I had absolutely no idea who they were. It was really quite funny. I never responded but it made me feel good!
