apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Meditation Room at Home
Washington DC

Do you have a quiet, meditative space at home? As it's Escapes Month at AT we wanted to highlight Sondra and Ron's meditation room. Even without the perfect attic space, we can still take away some great ideas from Sondra and Ron... and perhaps even create a quiet meditation space in our own homes. Tips below the jump...

Below are elements we noticed about Sondra and Ron's meditation room that make the space soothing.

Design features:
- comfortable seating
- warm, wood furniture
- natural light (Sondra and Ron installed a skylight)
- reading lamps so the room can be used at night
- plants
- soft, warm-colored rug
- plain walls with a few favorite artworks

Nice personal touches:
- neatly piled writing journals
- candles and incense
- a few favorite knick-knacks

Do you have a quiet space at home? Are any of these elements part of that space?

there seems like a lot going on this room for it to be a meditation room.

I like it. The chairs look comfortable. Plants always add an element of tranquility. Add in a few favorite things and you have a room you can relax in.

Hmmm, I just imagine sitting in that chair...and swatting that plant leaf from my head...

It's a lovely room, but I agree with others that there seems to be a lot going on in there for it to be a meditation room. I had a small room in my last house used for this purpose. There was one unadorned window, a low table with incense, a candle, a peaceful Buddha, and pictures of loved ones. I had a cushion on the floor in front of the altar and one plant in the corner.

I do like the chair. Where is it from? I think I may prefer it to sitting on the floor. The cushion looks nice and firm.

I live alone, so my entire home is a meditation room.

I thought the same thing...it's busy, and sensing that plant so close to my face as I meditated away would drive me near to insanity. For show it is nice...Fo' So'

Rick Roberts and unm00red: the chairs are called Edo chairs. Unfortunately, the DC store that carried them has since closed but I found them online: http://www.haikudesigns.com/edo-lounge-chair.htm

Jooly -- well-stated! I felt that way about my home when I lived alone.
