Once a year
The Studio Theatre on 14th Street holds a Garage Sale to sell all props and costumes from the season. The annual sale has been going on for 25 years and this year we stopped by to see the goods, which included furniture, lanterns, and other items useful in the home. Do you have any former theatre props in your home? Would you use former theatre props as home decor? Take the survey and see more photos from The Studio Theatre sale.
Are there any particular props you've seen in plays or movies that you'd want to repurpose in your home? Props from The Studio Theatre's popular plays are the first to go on sale day.

there is a theatre here in philadelphia that occasionally throws old props out in a dumpster. I've found some neat stuff, like a couple of old BB guns that have the bolts removed for safety. i have them scattered through out my house. usually it's just old painted sheetrock backdrops but occasionally you can find old clothes and other random odds and ends there.

When the Xfiles still filmed in Vancouver, I somehow acquired a bunch of T-shirts and lollipops they used in a scene.. it was a 10 year old's dream.
I figure it's basically the same as garage-sale/thrift furniture. If I like it, it's useable, affordable and I'm able to move it home, I'll take it.

My partner's in the art department. I have so many cooking show props in my kitchen, living-room drama set pieces in my living room, and leftover prop bedding sets in my bedroom than I really know what to do with - but who knows when it'll get "borrowed" back to be in something else.

Our local theatre had a prop sale and I scored an ancient (but Authentic) barcelona chair in tan hide. I love the fact that it is worn a bit and the fact it was $30.

I have a friend who's a stage director... and he's got some incredible furniture in his livingroom... up close they look rather strange but you can't figure out exactly what it is... until he explains that they are scaled and perspective projected pieces tha if looked from a certain angle give you a whole different space perception...

I have a carpet beater from a long-ago production of Oklahoma, and I use it when vacuuming is not enough.
My parents have an old painting that used to be a movie prop, though to be perfectly honest it's so ugly I hope they don't leave it to me.

it would have been great if AT DC would have posted about this event BEFORE it happened. DC readers come to this site to find out about sales events going on in our area. What good is a post about it after the fact? I definitely would have gone to this had I known about it.

Definitely, if it's a cool piece I'd use it, I tend to collect props or wardrobe from my favorite films and TV shows. Nope, don't go there, don't think Star Trek! I was inspired by a friend, who directed a film and gave me one of the props (a small covered box), and I began collecting pieces about a year ago. So, yes, if it fits in the house/collection and/or a favorite character wore it in a cherished film/TV show/play... I'd add it to my home.
