apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Survey: What's Your Pet's Favorite Place in Your Home?

9-19-cat-1.jpg

We found this wonderful photo of Mao in the "Apartment Therapy DC" flickr group. Mao enjoys hanging out near the computer, especially during AT Pet Design month. Does your pet have a favorite spot in your home? Have your pet's preferences changed how you use your furniture? Survey and more cute pets (including 17-year Hazelnut the cat from Capitol Hill) below the jump...

Shown above is Percy, a.k.a. Sir Percival of the U Street Corridor, who runs into the shower right after it's been used and likes to roll on the damp shower floor. (This means extra bathroom cleaning for Percy's owner.)

Below is Hazelnut of Capitol Hill. Throughout her 17-year long life, she has developed a daily routine of sleeping under the couch in the morning, lounging on the office chair in the afternoon, and sharing the bed at night.

Thanks to throw her in the water, Mao, Percy and Hazel! Join our "Apartment Therapy DC" flickr group and you may see your photos featured here on AT.

Technically I have no cats, but since I used to live there I can pretend that my parents' cats are still mine too!

Their favorite place no longer exists: back when we still had a big bulky monitor, they all loved to hang out right there. Failing that, any cardboard box, or unlucky backpack or tote that's been left on the floor is fair game!

Our dog -- despite having his own comfy bed -- likes to sleep on top of the silk curtains that puddle on the floor.

her crate! my puppy loves her crate and goes in there to sleep... its in the living room and has a custom dog bed in it so its the most comfortable place to sleep. we don't bother her when shes in it so she knows its her home.

They go wherever I am. They follow me to every room in the house. I have an entourage of felines. It is both disturbing and endearing.

haha...I love Percy.

My very social cat likes to be on top of things - the kitchen island, my laptop, my lap, and definitely spread out in the middle of the couch.

My anti-social cat likes to lay under a bench we have on top of a cardboard scratcher she uses regularly, under the bed, in the back of the closet making sure to coat all my pants and skirts with a layer of fur, and when she's feeling social - on the back of the couch by my head.

his fave spot is my bed, perpendicular to the direction i am sleeping, so as to cut off circulation to my legs. but i love him still.

our cat has selected a particular chair in the dining room, which he likes when it's pushed under the table (must be cozier that way). nap time begins at 11am, and if the door to the dining room is shut, then GWOW!--there's a sit-in protest until someone opens it.

we had a Percy kitty too -- Sir Percival Goodfellow (a WWI flying ace)...

our 18 year cat old sleeps on the wireless internet box, the keyboard (only when someone is trying to type) or on my husband's side of the bed (he's allergic, and she drools)... she sometimes sleeps in the sink in the master bathroom

our other feline hides, usually in the basement, and only comes out to greet visitors... at night, she sleeps at our feet...

Morning and night Bri is my shadow, literally either at my feet in the morning when I'm getting ready or sitting on the vanity watching me. Then the afternoons when I am usually at work, is her window sill napping time.

Molly is split between the very corner of our bed (even better if it's on her dad's dress pants!) and the windowsill to check the birds in our courtyard....but lately she's LOVING the cat tent we got her from Ikea! She'll occasionally go in the bathtub too when it's wet, just like Percy.

Either in my lap (slightly inconvenient when I want to do nearly anything around the house), in his (toy doll) playpen, or in the top shelf in the closet. Cats... :)

Dino, the wonder dachshund's favorite spot is on my bed. He thinks of it as his bed, but he lets me sleep in it as long as I stay on my side and don't take his pillow.

Spoiled?

Yeah, he thinks I am. But as long as I behave, we do fine.

The cats like to be next to me all the time. The exceptions are 1) if there is fresh shower water available, Gabby stops there first and 2) if there "new" food in the bowl, Bootini stops there first.
Other than that they pretty much shadow my every movement including bedtime.

Our kitty, Gertrude, likes to switch it up. Her current favorite 'bed' is a bass drum head case. She also likes to sunbathe, so she follows the sunshine around the house.

My Margot loves to run in the shower immediately after I get out as well. She'll even lick up warm, soapy water, so I have to be sure and use something that wouldn't make her sick! And she lays on my keyboard whenever I need it most and adds her own flair to emails. She also likes to sleep on my boyfriend's face. Cats are so wonderful!

Mittens, my tabby, prefers to spend her days lounging on top of her soft crate next to a large window. It gets really hot in my apartment if I leave the blinds open all day (we face west, towards mirrored skyscrapers that constantly reflect sunlight, and the windows don't open), but I always lift the blinds on that window just enough that Mittens can peer out while I'm at work. It's extra fun when bees land on the other side of the window. =)

Penny, my tuxedo cat, has her own window elsewhere. Our apartment is a loft with 20' ceilings, and she manages to make it from the balcony where the bedroom is to the very highest window in the apartment, and sits on the sill for hours. I always worry that she's going to fall asleep up there and fall off, but she hasn't yet, and I can't really stop her...

i giggled upon reading kosmicfreeway's comment (it's so true, my cat used to follow me everywhere the first couple of years after i adopted him) and the sound of my laugh perked my cat awake so he walked from the bed to my lap in my chair. so my answer to the post's question is 'on or next to me'.

my cats love the bathroom in my new apartment. Whenever I walk in there, they will jump in the tub and lounge... Yesterday morning my Clementine jumped in - while I was showering. She jumped backwards out of the shower. It was like putting it on rewind. I hate the little dirty paw prints all over the edge of the tub.

Mimo likes to be in one of our sinks. Rascal prefers to be high up on the shelf we put there specifically for them.
When we are at the computer they also both like to lie next to the keyboard.

One morning, after we just recently got them, I got up in the morning and found them both sleeping in the same sink, cuddled up together. So cute.

Shame loves to nap on the counter above the dishwasher during and after it's cycle. Medicine Paw likes to lay in the middle of the floor so she can trip us as we walk by. If we don't walk by her often enough she'll come find us and sprint under our feet so that we nearly fall on top of her. she also likes a pot of dirt on the back porch while shame prefers one of the camp chairs.

My cat Spike loved hanging around nearby when I was playing the piano. He would sit on the floor off to one side behind me, and then if he was really getting into it, would hop up on the piano and walk across the keys - duet for two hands and four paws :-)

Trip likes to lounge on the floor, the lounge chair ottoman, or the couch if we are not home. If I am using my laptop then he insists on sleeping behind it in my desk (I have a secretary style desk) and if I am doing dishes, then he will nap directly in front of the sink so I trip over him (living up to his name). Kaylee like to nap on the lounge chair, on top of the cushion on our big chair (so it gets all smushed) or on the bed in the sun spot. They both sleep on my side of the bed at night with Kaylee at my feet and Trip next to me.

My boxer Honey's favorite place is whereever she happens to be while she'd licking my face, about 6 inches behind me, or between my guy & I at night, with her head on my foot. The only time we're more than a foot apart is when I'm (a) getting ready for work in the morning, at which point she curls up on my pillow and goes to sleep because she know's she's not going with and (b) when I'm in the shower. She watches from the batroom door like 'OMG it's got her - what do I do?!?!'

My cat Fellini always curled up under my clawfoot tub with her Snoopy doll whenever someone was over. It was the cutest thing ever. When I was home alone, she'd just sit next to me wherever I was (or lie on top of me if I was lying on the couch.) In our family's vacation, home, though, she absolutely always was on, behind or in front of the dryer napping and on the rare occasion that she pulled herself away from it, you could usually find her sitting on the kitchen window sill watching birds. Ho hum ... I miss her ;-(

My boyfriend works from home and our cat Walter loves to sit on the corner of his desk. We’ve nicknamed Walter, “The Totally Useless Secretary”. Walter sleeps on the job (always on top of important papers), gets annoyed when a ringing phone interrupts his nap, insists on responding to emails even tough his typing is atrocious, and frequently brings inappropriate gifts like mice and birds into the office. We’d fire him, but Wally knows just how to cheer you up after a bad day at the office.

After my dirty kitchen linens have dried, I put them in a hamper in the pantry, and I have a cat who loves to wallow in it. I have never seen anything like it. And he loves to have a bunch of newly dried but dirty towels dumped on top of him. He will gather a dirty towel in the paws and hug it, and rub on it, and fall asleep. He does it in the hamper for dirty hand and face towels in my dressing room as well. (I don't like to sort dirty laundry, obviously.) Have you ever heard of such a thing?

My dog loves his crate aka man cave. I don't blame him. It has a fluffy down comforter, lots of pillows and a view of the front door.

Of course, sticks out like a sore thumb in the living room. May have a furniture piece made to cover it. Until then, I just live with it.

My cat likes to sit with me (or on my lap), but when I had a guest staying with me I learned that when I'm at work during the day my cat loves to sleep on the chair in my bedroom. Apparently he went there every afternoon for his "cat nap". I've also come home quite often to find the comforter on my bed all rumpled. It's a tell tale sign that he's burried himself under there at some point. I live in one of the hotter areas in L.A. so during the ubearably hot summer days, my cat loves to hide in the bathroom and spread out on the tiles.

people who are annoyed with the pet posts are idiots to waste their time commenting on pet posts about how they'd rather see regular decor post. ummmm..... THEN DON'T OPEN THE PET POST! duh! it's pretty easy. there are still plenty of other posts that aren't pet related. stop acting like spoiled rotten brats already. if you can't deal, then don't read posts until october. ..but stop bitching. it's called "pet design month" for a reason, and plenty of people are in fact enjoying it.

I love it, even though I don't have a cat anymore. When we dog-sit in our place, seems like the favorite place is right next to my DH's feet. My cat's fav place was always the windowsill, even when he grew too big for it--he would always cram himself in anyway.
