Tips: Making a Packing List
Washington DC

Whenever we travel, we inevitably forget something. It's usually not an issue because most friends' homes or hotels have the thing we forgot (toothbrush, shampoo, extra t-shirt). We've mentioned our attraction to lists and, in an attempt to be more organized, we created our own packing list (in Microsoft Word). A web search found more sample lists and tools shown below the jump...

You can also use free online tools to make your own lists:

- download the free Apple Travel-To-Do List widget

- The Universal Packing List, an interactive site (shown below)

If you don't feel like creating your own packing lists, you can order a pre-printed pad online:

- Travel Packing Checklist ($5.95; a 6 x 9 inch pad with 75 sheets) from Families With Purpose

- Packing Lists ($4.95; 25 pages) from List Organizer

- Pack This! Pad ($6.99; 6 x 9 inch pad with 60 pages) from Knock Knock (shown above the jump)

Do you use a packing list? If so, did you make or buy yours?

I travel frequently for work and have a tattered list of all the things I want to take with me that don't change (makeup, shampoo, underwear, iPod, book, etc.). Then I just add in the clothes, which is fairly easy. There is no stressing about packing - I just pull out my list of standards and know I'm not going to forget anything.

I travel mainly for work and usually for only 2-3 nights so...I always keep a toiletries bag fully stocked under the bathroom sink and some quart baggies and empty 3oz bottles and a few blue bags for dirty clothes and to separate shoes in my suitcase. I keep duplicates of most of my chargers packed together in a small bag too and a flash drive and small internet cable in my laptop back. I also keep travel 'accessories' in one box on my shelf...pill container, small umbrella, airplane ipod charger, wet wipes, etc. That way I half of my packing is always done for me.

I use a Google spreadsheet. Each column is a different category (clothes, papers, etc.). When packing I bold everything, if I'm not taking it or have already packed it I unbold that item.
