apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Decorative Mobiles for Ceiling Art

Once thought to be found only in the rooms of babies and children, mobiles have been given a new spin by designers over the years. After the one featured on Apartment Therapy yesterday, and the one we spotted this weekend in Alexandria, we've begun to rethink this childish piece of décor.

1 We loved this wooden bird mobile, found at Chinoiserie in Alexandria. Most mobiles have to be made with care taken to weight, as no one wants a mobile that droops to either side. This one hangs from a branch, eliminating that problem and adding a rustic touch.

2 This is the piece of wood that the bird mobile was cut out from.

3 The classic Flensted "Flowing Ribbon" mobile in rainbow.

5 "Spectrum" mobile by Brigitta and Benedikt Martig-Imhof

Maybe the whimsy is good for grown-ups too, as we can see the wooden bird mobile hanging over our desk at home.

My boyfriend bought me a mobile for my birthday. It's not modern like the ones that you're showing here- but very cute and whimsical. It's a tree branch with felted wool lambs and birds hanging from it. I saw it in a shop window months ago and fell in love with it- but I don't have any babies, so I couldn't justify buying it. He remembered and went back for it. Basically the sweetest thing ever.

I've got it hanging from my Ikea Hemnes, and it's my happy thought.
