Jailbird Striped Hallways

dc-1-27-09-house-beautiful-.jpg

2009 may be the year of the colorful home, but we've noticed that classic black and white stripes aren't losing any ground. For clean edgy impact, there's nothing quite like them.

After spotting the home of Christie and Tyler Chase on Design Sponge this fall, I began to think that stripes don't necessarily equal circus tent after all. When they're paired with a few simple accessories rather than a plethora of other textures and patterns, they exude a happy sophistication.

Like powder rooms and accent walls, hallways are the perfect place to bring life into a home with bold patterns and colors.

In limited areas (such as the first photo) the stripes seem quite chic. In the other photos, especially the last one, way overdone!

I love Dorothy Draper and I love that Carleton Varney keeps breathing new life into her vision. Stripe it baby!

For the last pic: Well, it's only paint. You can always get rid of the stripes when the next fad comes along.

In extremely limited doses, they are ok, otherwise they make me dizzy and ill - especially image 4.

What about those stair treads? Are they painted black or stained a very dark color? I love them! This is what I'm hoping to do to my stairs, but skipping the zebra striped runner. A classic creamy white is a great look with that.

I love stripes, but there are too many in the last photo, agreed.

We did something like this in our bathroom. We have a chair rail in there (not sure why) but above it we chose to paint it a nice blue and below it went with the black and white stripes. We LOVE the result.

I have always wanted striped walls somewhere and I just finished painting them in my mini sitting room. I love it, love it, love it.

The stairs and the first two homes with stripes are just gorgeous! The last one is a little overdone, but I love the feel of anything black and white.
