Name: Deborah
Location: Hyde Park — Austin, Texas
I live in a Metrohouse, which has been innovatively designed by combining two houses with an architectural feature. The two homes are connected with steel conduits across our driveway. Although we own our home outright, we are able to be considered a condominium for property tax purposes and this makes central Austin living much more affordable!
The house is 1570 square feet of indoor living space (even a darkroom under the stairs!), as well as several outdoor living spaces, including front and side gardens, an enclosed downstairs porch and an open air upstairs porch off of the master bedroom.
The thing that makes my Metrohouse unique, and the builder loves, is my inclusion of an eclectic style of vintage, shabby chic, and French motif within the industrial and quite contemporary features of the home. It blends very nicely and creates a cosy but contemporary lifestyle.
Thanks Deborah!

Wow! At first, when I saw the metal structure, I expected an industrial design inside. I actually yelped in delight when I saw the shabby chic interior. What a wonderful surprise that was.
I like the little table by the window with the screen making it feel like a separate room. I'm still trying to figure out where to put my one screen to create that effect.
you've created a pretty home in a space I would not have expected it.
But then...it IS Austin. And a person has to expect the unexpected!
I'm confused about the architectural feature linking two structures? where are the steel conduits? what am I missing? where is the driveway? what? do you live in both houses?
that said, it's lovely inside.

I have the same questions as pamh. So... excuse my duncery... you're not linking two houses by building across the driveway, but building another structure on the driveway as you would a house extension, but it's classified as an independent residence, even though it's used by your household? Or... ?
love the mix of hard metal industrial exterior and light, soft interior
except this architecture doesn't fit in with the rest of the neighborhood.
I realize more and more how much I love concrete floors! my only worry personally is resale. wonderful house!
I love this style! It has such neat architectural appeal outside without sacrificing coziness and personality inside. What a zen combination. This is a perfect blend of the style I like and the style my husband likes, I'll have to use this as a reference for my own design exploits in the future.
@ alainnotebook, I believe concrete is the foundation for any other type of flooring, so if someone dislikes it, it's actually an easier fix than tearing up old or ugly carpet/tile/wood/etc and then laying a new flooring. So it could actually be a selling point. I could be wrong, but this is my understanding.
I live in Houston but frequently visit friends in Austin. I so do NOT understand all the hostility toward modern structures. Yes, they do not look like cottages or ranchers, but they use the existing footprints of the original homes, as I understand it. So, they are not McMansions, sometimes the "teardowns" were not worth renovating and what the hell happened to the "Keep Austin Wierd" mentality?
House Tour Please!
Thanks for the positive comments - more to come on house tour, a generous thanks to apartment therapy. Could not show the connecting structure because the other house belongs to someone else and I did not want to invade privacy. Perhaps he will agree to future tour. A driveway goes between our houses and off in each direction for our respective carports. Steel conduits connect our houses (they look like pickup sticks in a way, cannot think of another description at the moment). The connection satisfies the code for condominium structure and we split property taxes according to our square footage. Yes, it isn't a bungalow and some of the neighbors were upset initially, but the builder was very thoughtful about incorporating the landscape in such a way that the houses do not stand out as a blunt statement. As with most change, the houses are now well embraced by the neighborhood. Being a good neighbor helps.
beautiful exterior ! i'd love to have you as my neighbor :)
