My Favorite Room: Home Office
Specs: 160 square feet
My home office is in the space the builder intended for a formal dining room, but since we're not formal people, I nabbed the spot for my office. I love having a window to the street where I can watch for the mail, delivery trucks, and visitors.
My favorite feature of my office is the coffee bar where an antique mail sorter, originally from a small-town Kansas bank is flipped on its side to serve as a display case for my collection of more than 70 coffee mugs. The top ledge holds a lighted globe and a quirky assortment of garage sale treasures.
My desk is an old farmhouse table that used to be our kitchen table, and close at hand is a slanted bookcase my dad built for all the reference books I use every day.
My dad also created the menu wheel that hangs over my desk where I clip invitations, appointment cards, notes-to-self, and all those papers that are too cool to throw away but would otherwise clutter up my desk.
A wide window ledge holds an assortment of orchids and other plants, and since I often work in my office in the wee hours of morning, there are many lamps scattered throughout the room (mostly garage sale finds), along with a string of dragonfly lights hung on a wonderful old door my niece painted my favorite color of teal/aqua. Lime green pillows and other accents, along with a few well-placed shots of red, give me a lively, colorful office that I never grow tired of.
