The biggest rug mistake I see in folks rooms here is that they try to use rugs that are too small - they end up with rugs that float in the middle of a room like an island with zero relation to the furniture in the room.

I have that little floaty rug, too. sigh.

But little floaty rugs are cheaper than big room-sized rugs! sigh.

I would agree that the biggest mistake is the rug that's too small, and I'm in that boat, only in that in my case, it's what I had and didn't have the funds to get the size I actually need.

Until I get rid of a largish, bland, beige sectional and replace it with something more colorful and smaller is when I then go for a new rug and the one I am aiming for is a remnant of white-ish shag, bound in the size I need for my living room area.

If you choose a shag that has a long enough pile, you might not need to bind it as the pile will simply flop over the edges.
